Friends, we continue our series of articles devoted to the breeds of short-footed cats that appeared with the participation of Munchkin. Today we have a cat breed Minskin and her founder guest of our site - Paul McSorley
Minskin is a breed of short-footed cats with unique hair. Cats of this breed can be
- Completely hairless (not standard)
- Fully covered with short hair (not standard)
- The Fur-Points breed standard is a hairless cat with distinct islands of thick velor hair on its face, ears, paws and tail. The body may have sparse coat, but the stomach is always naked.
Minskin is a mix of four breeds 1) Munchkin, 2) Burmese 3) Devon Rex, 4) Canadian Sphinx
Moreover, Munchkin and Burmanskaya are most important in the development of the Minskin breed. Sphinx and Devon Rex were used only to “borrow” the recessive gene responsible for changing hair.
I was one of the first to work with the Munchkins, and I am the founder of the Minskin breed. My mentor was Dr. Gen. Dr. Solveig Pflueger, head of the TICA Genetics Committee. Minskin cats are currently recognized by TICA as Preliminary New Breed (PNB)
Founder of Minskin breed
The history of the breed Minskin
In 1998 Paul McSorley started work on the Minskin breed. Just as Siamese cats in the color have marks of ears, feet, tail, and muzzle, he imagined a cat with short legs and hair like Siamese points - islands on a naked body. To achieve his goal, Paul crossed Munchkin with short paws and the Sphinx to obtain a hairless trait, and also used Devon Rex and Burmese in his breeding breeding program.
This beautiful kitty of a tortoise color with a white name is "Rory". She is the first standard cat of the Minskin breed, was born on July 4, 2000.
in the nursery TRT - The Rite Type, and by the beginning of 2005 there were already about 50 cats of the Minsk breed
In 2001, Minsk made its debut at the TICA exhibition in its hometown of Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
Many lovers of unusual cats are attracted today by a breed called Minsk. Its main features are very short limbs and a unique coat.
This is a fairly new breed, obtained as a result of huge breeding work. Minskskin cats are small, their weight usually does not exceed 3.5 kg. They live an average of 12-15 years.
The birthplace of Minsk is the United States, where the owner of one of the nurseries in 1998 tried to cross manchkin with the Canadian Sphynx.
In the process of selection, other cat breeds were added - Devon Rex, Burmese cat. The first kitten with the expected features (short legs, suede leather and unusual texture fur) was born in 2000.
Over the next 5 years, work was carried out to improve this breed, and in 2005 the number of its representatives exceeded 50.
After that, the most respected felinological organization TICA officially registered Minsk with the assignment of category 4 status, which means a hybrid breed derived from two already existing ones.
The dwarf cat Minsk has a number of characteristic features. Thanks to the strong skeleton, the body seems heavy. Nevertheless, the animal moves very easily and smoothly.
The short legs inherited from the Manchkins differ in length - the front ones are slightly shorter than the rear ones. Strong, round-shaped legs must always point forward.
A muscular body with a developed broad chest looks quite graceful. The length of the tail is proportional to the body.
The head is round, with well-defined cheekbones. Vibrissae pads are very clearly visible on the face, giving the cat an attractive look.
One of the features inherited from the sphinxes is the large triangular ears, wide at the base and rounded at the ends.
The chin is strong, well defined. Large oval-shaped eyes set wide apart. The cat's eyes are very friendly and open.
Minskin is the owner of very short wool, reminiscent of cashmere. On the body, it is quite rare, on the stomach it is absent altogether.
Another sign of the breed is fur points in the form of thick, short hair on the head, legs and ears of the animal.
Kittens often have skin folds - another of the hereditary traits inherited from the sphinxes.
The external charm of these animals goes well with a benevolent and accommodating character. Minsk cats are independent, but at the same time they are strongly attached to the owner and are ready to accompany him everywhere.
They endure loneliness with difficulty. Many owners prefer to take their pet everywhere. Cats wonderfully adapt to new conditions and change of scenery. They feel great in any vehicle. The main thing is that the owner should be nearby.
There are no problems with other pets. Minsk is capable of finding a common language with everyone, even with dogs and rodents. Representatives of this breed are completely uncharacteristic of aggression or jealousy.
These are pretty nimble and moving animals that can be active and curious at any age - from a kitten to an elderly cat.
Despite their short limbs, these cats have a special jumping ability and love to climb higher. They prefer to relax in nooks where no one will disturb them.
Minsk is a cat with a developed intellect. This pet is easy to accustom to order. He will never spoil furniture or make a toilet in the wrong place. In addition, maternal instinct is very well developed in cats.
Therefore, with small children, they behave patiently and kindly. This is an ideal pet for a large family, especially when many other pets live in it.
TICA breed standard
- The head is round, rather wide than long, without flat lines, with a strong chin, a wide and short muzzle and embossed mustache pads, a well-developed and flexible neck,
- The ears are large, open and alert, with slightly rounded tips, wide at the base, can be completely bald,
- The eyes are big and round, set wide, the look seems surprised and wary,
- The nose is not straight, but without a hump, a slight bend at the end,
- Mustache - may be rare, broken, or even absent
- The body - due to short paws, may appear long, the line of the back is slightly elevated to the hips, a wide, strong and muscular chest,
- Paws - short, of equal length above and below the knee joint, hind legs slightly longer than the front,
- Tail - a little longer than the body, gradually tapering from the base to a slightly blunt tip,
- Wool is short, fur points on the face, ears, legs, tail and under the tail, sometimes the fur can be along the entire length of the legs, on the hips and shoulders, but the belly is always bald.
Caring for the Minsk breed is almost the same as caring for the sphinxes.
- It is very important to keep your pet's skin clean to avoid the accumulation of sebaceous secretions and the formation of acne. Therefore, you need to bathe a cat quite often (2-3 times a month), using baby shampoos or special products.
Periodically, wipe the pet's body with a damp sponge.
- Fur points are recommended to be combed daily.
- Regularly it is necessary to monitor the condition of the skin, checking it for abrasions, scratches or cuts. In addition, a careful examination will help to detect any disease in time.
- The delicate skin of these animals in summer needs protection from sunlight, and in winter from the cold.
- Cats are very mobile and active, so you can not do without cutting the claws. This is best done with a special claw cutter.
- Careful care is required for the pet’s ears. Each week they need to be cleaned with swabs soaked in oil, removing accumulated dirt and excess sulfur.
- A cat needs to brush its teeth about once a month.
- Minskin is a breed unpretentious for food. Its representatives have a good appetite and enjoy dry industrial feeds, as well as cottage cheese, vegetables, low-fat meat and other natural products that cats usually feed. The main thing is that the food is fresh and full.
- Do not forget about visiting a veterinarian to make the necessary vaccinations and carry out anthelmintic treatment.
The miniature sizes of representatives of Minsk and their extraordinary coat do not in any way affect the health of the animal.
It is still too early to judge the presence of various hereditary diseases - the breed is too young and there are no such statistics. In some cases, there is a violation in the development of the animal associated with curved posture and deformation of the chest (lordosis).
Basically, if a cat is provided with proper care and good nutrition, its body has a certain resistance to disease.
The birthplace of this breed is the USA. In 1998, Paul Maxorley started breeding Minsk in Boston. He wanted to create a cat with short legs and spots of fur in certain places. To do this, he brought together short-legged fluffy munchkins with almost bald sphinxes, in which only some parts of the body are covered with hair. Then a Burmese cat and Devon Rex were added to the mixture.
The first kitten of Minsk was born in July 2000. He was called Rory. After 5 years, 50 representatives of this breed already existed and it was recognized by international felinological organizations. TICA has a special program that continues to monitor the breeding and development of Minsk.
Appearance of breed Minskin
A rounded head with large ears and large round eyes on the face make a sweet facial expression. The body is low, stocky semi-cobby type. The color of the coat can be any. The islands of wool “Fur-Points” on the body resemble cashmere and have a satin sheen. The hair on the paws can reach the shoulders and hips, and sometimes the texture undergoes seasonal and hormonal changes. The coat is sparse throughout the body, and it is very warm to the touch.
Minskins are exclusively domestic cats. On the street they can be released only in the warm season and on a leash. If the kitten is accustomed to the street and in case of fright returns to the owner or to the house, and does not run, the eyes look, you can try to let him go under supervision. These pets are very thermophilic, prefer to sleep in secluded cozy corners. Therefore, if the cat does not have its own house, he will climb under the covers, on the shelves and drawers in the cabinets.
At home, cats rarely eat natural foods. Most Americans are of the opinion that the best food for these animals is high-quality dry food.
This is a breed of cat that requires regular grooming. In general, they should be looked after the same way as the sphinxes. The skin needs special attention. Once a week, cats are bathed with baby shampoo or a special tool for washing hairless cats. Every day they rub their eyes and ears, and some who do not differ in cleanliness have to wipe their ass after visiting the toilet. Once every 2-3 weeks, sometimes more often, you need to trim the claws. It is advisable to perform this procedure even if the cat is accustomed to the claw-point to prevent breaking off and cracking of the nail plate.
Kitten selection and price
It is important to understand that in Europe and, in particular, in Russia, as in other CIS countries, it is almost impossible to buy a Minsk kitten. Nurseries do not deal with a new experimental breed, since it is not so in demand.
Well, if you really really want to get this very short-legged naked creature, you have to turn to breeders from the USA. In the United States, no more than a dozen nurseries dealing with these cats are registered. In order to avoid competition and negative impact on the development of the breed, animals are usually sold under castration / sterilization.
A Minskskin kitten in America costs $ 700 on average, and fully fluffy kittens are much cheaper than hairless ones.
Care and Feeding
The lack of hair makes the skin of these pets hypersensitive to the effects of bacteria, getting cuts, abrasions ... and excessive sweating contributes to the appearance of a rash and even point inflammation. Therefore, to make Minsk look well-groomed and feel good, you should regularly wipe your pet with wet hypoallergenic wipes, or bathe with special shampoos (designed to care for sphinxes). Of course, you can use baby detergents, but in this case, you can dry the skin of the pet, making it even more susceptible to infection.
Minsk people love to sunbathe, but again, returning to the properties of the skin, this is not always useful for cats.
This pet will require care for the cleanliness of the tail, on the outside of which there are sebaceous glands.
It is necessary to monitor the eyes of Minskins, and since everyone has clear secretions, just wipe the cat’s eyes daily with a swab (moistened with boiled water, a solution of furatsilin or a decoction of pharmacy chamomile).
The appearance of yellowish / white discharge from the eye - indicates infection, it is urgent to seek veterinary help.
The ears of Minsk are large, they should be cleaned at least once a week from brownish discharge. It’s not worthwhile to “get into” the ear deeply, just a superficial cleaning with a cotton swab is enough. In no case should you use solutions containing alcohol (so as not to drain the ear mucosa).
Kittens are taught to brush their teeth from early childhood, since the procedure is unpleasant for cats. You can use either a soft toothbrush, or special food with dento additives - so that the teeth are cleaned of plaque, the gums are healthy, etc.
The tray, as with all procedures to maintain body cleanliness, must be taught as early as possible. Minskers are tidy to the extreme and quickly realize that they need to walk in need in a strictly designated place. Do not spoil the relationship with the cat, scolding him for sending his natural needs to the most unexpected places (after all, the uncleaned tray may become the cause in time).
In the diet of Minsk skins, the daily feed rate is exactly the same as that of other cat breeds, but this cat needs to be fed more often (since energy transfer is faster due to lack of hair).
