"ProPlan" (cat food): reviews of veterinarians. Reviews about ProPlan food for cats wet and dry

If a fluffy pet lives in your home, namely, a cat beloved by all members of the family, then you are probably wondering how to provide it with good nutrition. It's no secret that our furry friends are often spoiled, as we ourselves teach them to eat from our table. This is not at all useful, since it is most often too salty or spicy, which means it is completely unsuitable for the cat's body.

To save time, many refuse a natural diet and completely switch to ready-made dry or wet food. Today we are interested in the ProPlan brand (cat food). Reviews of veterinarians fully approve of its use, which means that they will make the right choice for each owner or breeder.

A little about the company and product range

Surely you have already heard about these feeds, they are produced under the Purina logo. This brand has long won the trust of most owners, as reviews confirm that this helps to strengthen and maintain the health of your furry pet. The range of feeds is particularly attractive. The product line has something to eat for cats and cats, small kittens and animals with severe dietary restrictions due to various diseases. In any case, you can be sure that the “ProPlan” - cat food - is perfect for a furry pet. The reviews of veterinarians confirm that, unlike cheap economy class options, the composition of the feed in this class fully complies with all standards, which means that it ensures the normal functioning of the body.

ProPlan feed advantages

First of all, as leading experts in the field of cynology and felinology emphasize, this product line is made from easily digestible, high-quality and carefully balanced ingredients. Manufacturers made sure that, despite the usefulness of the ingredients used, the food is also very tasty. This is determined very easily: furry pets are delighted with their new diet and never mind asking for supplements.

You can definitely offer a tidbit to even the most capricious kitten, which he will not refuse. It can be chicken, duck, turkey or salmon. A varied choice of taste will allow not only to please the pet, but also to avoid the fact that the feed is tired.

However, this is not all that characterizes ProPlan. Cat food (reviews of veterinarians fully share this opinion) should include a large amount of protein to provide your animal with energy, as well as have a low fat content. Both those and other requirements are fully consistent with the Purina trademark.

Varieties of feed

First of all, we will consider dry dinners, since this is the option most often chosen by the owners. This is easy to explain: they are cheaper, easier to store them, and no worries that canned food can sour in a cup. It is believed that "drying" is harmful to cats. Maybe if these are cheap economy-class products, however, ProPlan (cat food) is a completely different matter. Reviews of veterinarians emphasize that before transferring a pet to it, you need to weigh your capabilities in advance. If you plan to continue to feed with natural food, then do not violate the natural digestive process. That is, you need to feed either one or the other.

Each animal has its own special food.

The quality of this product is regularly noted by customers. Pets that received it for some time, demonstrate excellent health, vigor and energy. In addition, the quality of these feeds has been repeatedly proven by numerous studies.

Let's look at what kind of dry food “ProPlan” for cats is on the market today. Reviews of veterinarians suggest that it can be taken without fear, the composition is absolutely natural and meets the basic needs of cats.

Varieties of dry food

The first group is marked with Junior. This food consists of heat-treated chicken and rice meat. First of all, this food is designed for kittens, which can be transferred to it, starting from a month of age. Granules should be soaked in milk. Such a feed will fully provide your pet with the necessary trace elements and vitamins that are necessary for its growth and development. Therefore, without any fear, you can take ProPlan dry food for cats as the basis of nutrition. The reviews of veterinarians confirm that much less problems with digestion occur in animals, which the owners accustomed to these foods from childhood and adhere to such nutrition in the future.

For adult cats

The second group is intended for animals older than a year, on the packaging is the designation Adult. However, here there is a gradation, as all animals have individual characteristics. Thus, Sterilized food is high in protein, and therefore is excellent for sterilized cats and neutered cats. If your pet is prone to allergic reactions, then it is best for him to take food from the series

Delicate. Dental Plus - these are feeds that are distinguished by large granules, they are recommended for cats with problem teeth, as thorough chewing allows you to clean them. Finally, the Senior series is ProPlan dry food for cats, the most positive reviews about it. It is designed for animals older than seven years and allows you to maximize their fun and carefree life.

Feed composition

It should be noted that dry and wet foods do not differ in composition, so you can be sure that your pet is fed correctly, and it does not matter which form you choose. At least 40% protein is part of the feed, this is the basis without which it is impossible to imagine a healthy cat's life. One package contains 20% meat ingredients, corn gluten, cereals and chicory root, animal or fish oils, concentrated proteins, aromatic additives and vitamins. Exactly the same composition, only with the addition of more meat and bone meal and offal, the wet ProPlan food for cats differs. Testimonials from veterinarians emphasize that there are no clear standards regarding what is best for a cat. Some purrs better digest dry food, others wet.

Wet feed

Canned foods have the main distinguishing feature, or rather, contain a lot of protein in their composition. This determines the competitiveness of the ProPlan brand. Wet cat food, reviews of which indicate its excellent tolerance, not only has a good composition, which is confirmed by research, but also simply loved by cats. Most furry beauties prefer it over dry snacks. It is usually produced in individual packaging, but if the cat has not eaten a serving right away, then the leftovers will have to be thrown out.

In each serving, you will find mouth-watering pieces of meat and a wet sauce. At the same time, pay attention: if the food is kept in a cup, the sauce dries up and nutrition decreases significantly, so train your pet to eat according to a certain schedule. Wet cans are available in cans or portioned bags. Moreover, they come with salmon and chicken, with turkey, lamb or rabbit. Depending on the preferences of your pet, you can take him one favorite food or alternate.

Dry dog food

Dry food is a granular product with a moisture content of 10-12%, balanced in composition and enriched with vitamins and minerals.

Science Plan offers quality balanced nutrition for dogs of different physiological groups. Presciption Diet - makes food for pets who have health problems. Hills produces a range of first-class meat and cereal feeds. Other well-known manufacturers: Profine, Pro Pac, Orijen, Eukanuba, Acaha, Pedigree.

How to store dry food?

Dry granules of dog food are stored in a clean, ventilated room with a relative humidity of 70-75%, at a temperature not exceeding 18 ° C. The temperature indicator is not critical, rather, it is necessary to prevent the ingress of sunlight and the location of the package near heating devices.

The manufacturer indicates the shelf life on the packaging. Typically, the storage period is 1-2 years. Foods in which vitamin E is a preservative are stored no more than six months.

An open food bag is stored tightly tied or closed with special clamps. The industry offers special tanks whose use will prevent drying or wetting of the feed. When purchasing a tank, pay attention to the presence of markings - "Suitable for food."

How to store wet food?

Canned food is hermetically sealed, so it remains suitable for feeding longer than dry food. Their shelf life is 2-3 years. Store them, avoiding direct sunlight, away from heaters, following the recommendations on the package.

Open wet food is stored in the refrigerator for no more than a day. After opening, canned food is transferred to a glass jar or a special container. Freezing wet food is allowed.

How to determine that the feed is not suitable for feeding?

The suitability of the feed for feeding to a pet can be judged by organoleptic signs - appearance, consistency, color and smell.

In dry foods, the presence of lumps, rot and mold is not allowed. Color and smell should be appropriate for this type of product.Food with signs of spoilage and a musty, unusual or rancid odor is not used in the dog’s diet.

In wet foods exclude putrefactive inclusions and mold. In the presence of substandard impurities, an unpleasant or rancid odor, the product is not used in feeding.

Feed contaminated by insects and their larvae is not suitable for consumption.

Low-quality food poisoning

Poisoning is always a consequence of the ingress of poison into a living organism. Spoiled foods accumulate toxic substances that can cause poisoning to pets. Signs for contacting a veterinary clinic are:

  • oppressed or overexcited condition of the animal,
  • weakness,
  • diarrhea,
  • vomiting
  • cramps
  • profuse salivation,
  • shiver.

In dogs, symptoms develop rapidly, the condition worsens rapidly, so when the first signs appear, you should immediately contact your veterinarian.

Feed storage errors

Improper storage of feed leads to deterioration of their qualities, diseases and poisoning of animals.

  1. Storage of large packages on the balcony or in the yard under a canopy. It is convenient for the owner, but often changing weather conditions and humidity lead to premature spoilage of feed.
  2. Pour dry feed into the tank. The entire feed bag is placed in a special container, and not poured out of the package. So the food will retain freshness, aroma and nutritional properties for longer.
  3. Leaving the packaging or container open. The food deteriorates and its nutrients are destroyed by contact with air.
  4. Storage of open canned food outside the refrigerator. 4 hours after opening the packaging of wet food, pathogenic microflora begins to actively develop.

Veterinary - sanitary norms and requirements for the quality of feed for non-productive animals

1. Developed by the All-Russian State Research Institute of Control, Standardization and Certification of Veterinary Medicines and the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Veterinary Sanitation, Hygiene and Ecology.

2. Approved by the Veterinary Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of the Russian Federation.

3. In place of the "Veterinary and sanitary requirements for feed for non-productive animals", approved by the GUV of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of the Russian Federation on 26.10.94 N 13-7-2 / 174.

4. Validity period. No expiration date.

This normative document (hereinafter referred to as the document) applies to feed for unproductive animals, including full-feed and additional food in the form of "treats" (hereinafter referred to as feed) used for feeding dogs, cats, ornamental birds, aquarium fish.

The document is intended for organizations engaged in state veterinary supervision, registration and certification in the field of feed production in the territory of the Russian Federation, as well as for imported feed.

The document was developed on the basis of the Guidelines of the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia, the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, EEC directives, the rules of the Federation of European Institutes for Quality Control of Feed, the Certification Program for Pet Food of the Canadian Association of Veterinary Medicine, as well as other regulatory documents that guide the association feed manufacturers in Europe, the USA and Canada.

General Provisions

Feed for non-productive animals, according to their water content and the method of conservation, are classified as dry (5 - 12% water), semi-moist (15 - 20% water), canned (72 - 85% water) and frozen (60 - 70% water).

Dry food is produced in the form of granules, flakes, cookies, powder, canned - in the form of minced meat, a homogeneous mass, pieces in sauce or jelly.

According to the nutrient content of the feed, they are divided into full-ration, including dietary, medicinal and used as additional nutrition ("goodies").

Full feed is called such feed, the use of which fully meets the physiological needs of animals.

Medicated feed should only be used as directed by a veterinarian.

Supplementary nutrition (“delicacy”) is not intended to be used as the only product in the diet, as it may be unbalanced in nutrient content.

The main requirements for feeds are their safety (the absence of acute toxic properties and possible negative consequences after their use) and nutritional value, providing the physiological needs of the animal organism (for complete feeds).

Indicators and Norms

2.1. Organoleptic indicators

Organoleptic indicators include: appearance, color, smell, granule size. Organoleptic indicators allow the identification of feed and the requirements for them should be reflected in the regulatory documentation or manufacturer's specifications.

These indicators should characterize the specificity of the feed, satisfy the habits and type of animals. The feed must not have any extraneous (not characteristic of this feed) odors, inclusions and other visible defects.

The organoleptic characteristics of each type of feed are determined in accordance with the regulatory documentation for this feed or manufacturer's specifications (for imported feed).

2.2. Safety indicators

Safety indicators include: toxicity, microbiological indicators (total bacterial contamination, the presence of opportunistic and pathogenic microflora), the content of salts of heavy metals, pesticides, mycotoxins, nitrites - harmful impurities that can cause negative consequences after they affect animals. When analyzing feeds for these indicators, methods are used that are approved by the State Standard of the Russian Federation, the Veterinary Department of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, and, if necessary, the methods given in the normative documentation for feed.

Table 1 presents the maximum permissible levels (MDL) of the content of substances potentially hazardous to the health of animals in feed for non-productive animals and methods for their determination.

2.3. Nutrition Indicators

The nutritional value of feeds is determined by the content of nutrients (proteins, fats, carbohydrates, macro- and microelements, vitamins, etc.) in them and should fully ensure the physiological needs of the animal organism (for complete feeds).

Indicators of nutritional value of feed allow to identify complete feed. Failure to comply with the standards for nutrient content in complete feed can cause negative consequences for animals.

Confirmation during the control of the feed of the actual nutrient content indicated by the manufacturer on the label or in the accompanying documentation (hereinafter referred to as declared) will prevent the sale of falsified feeds, protect the consumer from an unscrupulous manufacturer and is necessary to assess the stability of production.

The nutrient content in the feed must comply with the declared values within the tolerances given in table 2.

To summarize

We only need to talk about reviews about the ProPlan food for cats. Most owners who decide to switch to finished feed are wary of this procedure and are doing it right. You must choose the right composition that is ideal for your pet. Among all the abundance of options, the ProPlan forage is the best value for money. Many owners note that from the first days of switching to these feeds, the cat became more active, more fun, its coat shone like never before. At the same time, veterinarians often note an improvement in the condition of pets suffering from chronic diseases. Based on the foregoing, we can conclude that such a diet is an excellent alternative to natural.

However, this is not all that characterizes ProPlan. Cat food (reviews of veterinarians fully share this opinion) should include a large amount of protein to provide your animal with energy, as well as have a low fat content. Both those and other requirements are fully consistent with the Purina trademark.

How long can I store open dry pet food?

How long can I store open dry pet food?

Dry food for dogs and cats should not be stored long open, so as not to rancid fats contained in the feed.

Suppliers often offer branded dry feed storage tanks. As a rule, the tanks are made of plastic or tin, but in either case it is better to store the feed in the company bag in which the feed was purchased. And already this package needs to be put in a tank.

It is optimal to store food no longer than 3 months. Just choose the packaging that your pet will eat during this time.

Open dry pet food can be stored for a long time (up to several months), but it is important to find a suitable place for storage.

A great danger to open packs and bags of food is represented by such storage conditions as:

direct sunlight or sunlight

high temperature and just oxygen.

When all these conditions are in the room where the open food is stored, the fat in its composition is oxidized and, as a result, all vitamins and nutrients are destroyed. But the main thing is not this, but the fact that the feed becomes dangerous and can lead to poisoning of the animal.

Pour the food into a clean and dry jar, close it with a tight lid and store it in a dark and cool place where it can be stored for 3 to 6 months.

Recently I transferred the dog to dry food and was puzzled by this question. Here is what I managed to find out from the specialists:

After opening the dry food, it is advisable to store no more than 25 days, because after opening in a dry feed, some chemical processes begin to occur due to preservatives. After this period, the food becomes somewhat toxic and some dogs may have negative health effects, such as indigestion, etc. In this regard, some inexperienced dog breeders sin on the food and start experimenting with other foods than cause a certain harm to the dog’s health.

Therefore, the experts whom I consulted recommended not to buy a healthy bag for a couple of months (as I wanted due to saving money and time), but to calculate the weight of the package so that after opening it would be enough for no more than 25 days .

As a result, I decided to share this information with the community and came to the conclusion that it’s better to pay more, but my dog will be healthy, which I wish for others.

It's funny, for some reason I always thought that such information was mandatory written on a label or a bag of food. But, alas, for some reason this is not on the bag with dry food for my cat, although I’ll tell you right away the food is not cheap. There is a general shelf life of about two years, the temperature and humidity at which to store this product, too (from 4 to 35 degrees and humidity not more than 75%). I had to look for Old on the Internet. It turns out that the shelf life can be up to 6 months, but it is necessary to pour the product into airtight packaging and isolate it from sunlight. It is clear that these recommendations are especially relevant for those who buy food bags.

Recently I transferred the dog to dry food and was puzzled by this question. Here is what I managed to find out from the specialists:

How to store dry food for dogs and cats

The undoubted advantage of dry feeds is that they have a long shelf life and do not deteriorate without a refrigerator. They can be stocked up for the future, which is very convenient for busy people and residents of remote settlements. However, there are certain storage conditions for dry food that every owner of a cat or dog should know.

Shelf life of dry feed

If the packaging is not opened, it can be stored until the expiration of the period indicated by the manufacturer after the words "Expired until ...". Of course, after this date, dry food does not turn into poison instantly, but indicators of guaranteed analysis may change, for example, the content of certain vitamins will decrease, and most importantly, rancidity of fats will come, which already threatens with unpleasant consequences. Therefore, when buying, it is so important to pay attention to the dates and dates.

Some manufacturers indicate only the production date and the period during which the feed will remain fresh - in this case, you need to calculate the maximum storage period yourself.

Preservatives are different

As a rule, dry food is stored for no longer than 18 months, during which the action of natural antioxidants (sources of tocopherols), which usually preserve high-quality food, lasts. If a longer shelf life is provided, dry food of this brand most likely contains artificial preservatives.

They reliably protect products from bacterial growth and oxidation, but are considered less safe in comparison with natural antioxidants.

How much dry food can be stored after opening the package depends on the manufacturer's recommendations.Usually this period is not more than 3 months. If during this period your pet does not have time to eat the contents of the package, it is worth considering other packaging options.

Dry food storage conditions

Dry food, as most manufacturers advise, should be stored in a dark, dry and cool place, with particular emphasis on the tightness of the packaging. Direct sunlight and air access dramatically accelerate the oxidation of fats, shortening the shelf life of the product.

Excess moisture provokes the formation of mold, and also creates an excellent environment for the reproduction of tick-saprophytes. When these invisible pests start up in a bag, the granules look like dusted dust and become unsuitable for consumption.

In country houses, rodents can also be added to these misfortunes, which not only significantly reduce your reserves, but are also carriers of dangerous infections. The latter can also be attributed to flies, which not only spread harmful bacteria, but also lay eggs in food products.

To keep the feed convenient and airtight, it is best to buy a special tank with a lid made of food-grade plastic or stainless steel. If you just poured granules into a container, save the information from the package or write down the day it was opened. So you will always remember how much dry food is stored and up to what date it must be used.

But still it is better to put the entire package in the container, releasing air from it, carefully wrapping the top edge and securing it with paper clips or clothespins. Sometimes manufacturers equip zip-zipped feed bags with a special clasp that allows you to repeatedly open and close the package while maintaining its integrity.

This is convenient when the food bag is small and will not be stored for long. In other cases, it is better to play it safe and wrap the packaging as we stated above. Following these simple rules will help maintain the nutritional value of the feed and its attractiveness to pets.

Dry food, as most manufacturers advise, should be stored in a dark, dry and cool place, with particular emphasis on the tightness of the packaging. Direct sunlight and air access dramatically accelerate the oxidation of fats, shortening the shelf life of the product.

Dry food Proplan: benefits for the cat and its owner

Each owner wants his cat to be healthy, cheerful and happy. A significant role in this is played by the correct choice of feed (composition is especially important). Balanced nutrition Proplan for cats occupies a leading position in the market of pet products. The food is popular and receives positive reviews from both professional breeders and ordinary affectionate purrs.

What is dry food and what are its benefits?

Dry food is gaining popularity among pet lovers, including cat breeders. There are several reasons for this:

  • time saving. The owner does not have to stand at the stove and prepare the right food for the pet. The feeds are balanced, they take into account all the cat's energy needs and include important vitamin and mineral supplements,
  • reasonable cost
  • convenient storage
  • the possibility of selecting a therapeutic and balanced diet for sterilized and neutered cats,
  • low consumption due to sublimation of granules (water removal),
  • reducing the risk of calculus formation, which leads to suppuration of the gums, gingivitis and even tooth loss. Pets that eat dry food do not suffer from this disease. A special coating on the granules cleans the teeth.

The transition of the cat to ready meals can be carried out at any age. Gradual replacement of the diet occurs within 5-7 days.

There are some drawbacks to this cats nutrition:

  • the animal does not always gnaw crackers with appetite. Canned food is much tastier and more aromatic. To solve this problem, the food is moistened with warm water until a soft mass is formed. This method is effective, but neutralizes the preventive effect of granules in relation to tartar. Also, you can’t leave moistened food in a cup for a long time - it will turn sour,
  • drying the ingredients destroys most nutrients and nutrients. Therefore, it is worth choosing feed with a high content of fresh meat ingredients. They contain more biologically valuable substances,
  • The composition includes a large amount of carbohydrates with a high glycemic index. It is fraught with diabetes and other unpleasant diseases. But this is true only in relation to cheap feed of economy class.

When buying dry food, pay attention to the packaging. Conscientious manufacturers indicate on the label detailed information about the qualitative and quantitative composition of the products. The package should also have a barcode, company logo, production date and expiration date.

Why choose Proplan?

In any modern pet store, a wide selection of dry food and canned meat for fluffy gourmets is presented. All the diversity can be divided into three classes: super premium, premium and economy. French complete feed Propl (Pro Plan) belongs to the class of "premium". It contains all the necessary nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Products are developed with the participation of veterinarians.

The Proplan line includes cat food for a variety of lifestyles. For example, there is diet food for neutered and sterilized animals. It contains active ingredients that prevent the formation of sand and stones in the bladder. Prevention of urolithiasis is important precisely for neutered cats.

Purina also offers food for sedentary pussies who live in an apartment and do not go outside. The main problem of such animals is intestinal obstruction. They swallow too much wool, which stray into lumps and get stuck in the intestines. Street cats are free from such troubles. They are in constant motion and lumps easily come out.

All Proplan products are easily digestible feeds, which include a large amount of dietary fiber. Each granule is coated with a special coating for the prevention of tartar. The basic requirement: sterilized and neutered cats that feed on dry food should always have a bowl of clean and fresh water.

Owner reviews about the feed are generally positive. The owners note the normalization of digestion, the improvement of the condition of the teeth and coat in their pets. In sterilized and neutered animals, rapid weight gain was observed, so the amount of food for them must be strictly normalized.

Pro Plan Product Range

In a series of dry feed Proplan 11 types of products are presented. The composition and recommendations for use are different for each species.

  1. The Proplan product line for healthy adult cats that do not have health problems and do not need diets. A choice of three items is offered: “Salmon with rice”, “Chicken with rice”, “Duck with rice”.
  2. Natural carbohydrate-rich. The composition includes brown rice.
  3. Original with 40% protein.
  4. Hairball Management for the prevention of bowel obstruction.
  5. Indoor Care for domestic cats that are not outdoors. The composition is thought out taking into account the sedentary lifestyle of such animals, including castrated and sterilized.
  6. Sensitive Skin & Stomach for affectionate pets with sensitive digestion. Prevents skin problems prone to allergic manifestations.
  7. Weight Management - Diet balancing nutrition for overweight cats.
  8. Low protein Urinary Tract Health to maintain healthy urinary system in castrated and sterilized cats.
  9. After Care Salmon and Tuna for sterilized cats and neutered cats.

The composition of dry granules includes many ingredients: flour, corn gluten, chicken offal, etc. Therefore, even premium foods can cause allergies. When choosing a suitable Proplan line, you must carefully monitor the health status of the pet.

Dietary feeds are complete. That is, in addition to them, nothing more needs to be added to the cat's menu. An exception is the introduction of a product on the recommendation of a veterinarian.

Dishes for feeding dogs

Of the necessary accessories in dog care, it is worth highlighting bowls for feeding and storage tanks. It is important that the material for making everything that comes in contact with food is safe and suitable for food. Special bowls are more convenient for feeding dogs than adapted dishes.

Bowls are best to get 3-4 pieces. Water is poured into one, dry or wet food in the second. The third is needed for feeding broth or milk.

A dog’s bowl is washed immediately after feeding with wet food, as bacteria develop in its residues. With a dry type of feeding, it is sufficient to keep it clean daily.

The dishes for feeding are selected from durable materials; they are not used when cracks and chips appear.

Storage conditions for feed of different brands

Most dry food is stored for more than a year, wet in a sealed package - more than 2 years. Timing varies depending on the composition and preservative used by the manufacturer. The production date and expiration date are indicated on the packaging.

Acaha feed is stored under the above conditions, shelf life is 15 months. Production date and expiration dates are indicated on the packaging. Pedigree retains its properties for 18 months from the date of manufacture.

Most dog owners prefer to buy ready-made feeds for their pets: it is more difficult to provide an animal with homemade food, and with the current rhythm of life, there is often not enough time for yourself to buy fresh food and prepare daily food. Usually the owner of the animal focuses on the quality of canned food or dry croquettes. However, the duration and storage conditions of the feed are no less important than its composition - improper storage or exceeding the shelf life can lead to spoilage of the feed or its infection, and, as a result, to health problems of the dog.

What determines the shelf life

The inscription on the packaging of the food “Good to” means the date after which it will not contain the substances declared in the composition. In some cases, the manufacturer indicates the date of manufacture and expiration date. To prolong the period of preserving the quality of products in the feed industry, natural or artificial preservatives are used - substances that inhibit the activity of microorganisms and slow down the oxidation processes.

Natural preservatives include:

  • lemon acid,
  • vitamins E (tocopherol) and C (ascorbic acid),
  • extracts of herbs with antioxidant effects.

Artificial preservatives are chemical compounds:

  • Propyl gallate (E310) - ester of gallic acid and propyl alcohol,
  • Ethoxyquin (Santoquin) - a synthetic antioxidant,
  • Propylene glycol (E12520) - a preservative, has bactericidal properties,
  • Salicylic Acid (BHA) - Antioxidant,
  • Ionol (butylhydroxytoluene, BHT) is a representative of the phenolic antioxidant group.

Good to know! Artificial preservatives are less safe, but more effective than natural ones. Therefore, the shelf life of feed, which includes synthetic preservatives, is usually longer.

Standard storage times for dry and wet feed

Unopened packages of dog food can be stored at room temperature until the expiration date indicated on the jar or pauch bag. Only canned food is placed in the refrigerator, the packaging of which indicates a storage temperature below 10 ° C.Dry food should not be stored in rooms with high humidity (for example, in the bathroom), as they, despite the sealed packaging, can absorb moisture and mold.

The terms of use of various types of food concentrates for pets are determined by the technical regulation “On requirements for feed and feed additives” registered in the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation. The evaluation of the shelf life is done by special laboratories for the biological safety of veterinary drugs.

  • control analyzes of the composition of the stored samples of food concentrates,
  • the use of accelerated methods of aging products using exposure to temperature, oxygen, UV rays,
  • application of mathematical modeling methods.

Packed in metal jars canned food for dogs, as a rule, have a shelf life of 2-3 years. Placed in sealed doy packs, flow packs, spider packs or sachets are stored for no more than 2 years. Dry granules or croquettes are edible throughout the year.

How to store open food

Often a serving of food in a single package is too large for one feeding, so you need to know how to store open canned food or dry food. The main threats to feed in open packaging are oxygen, light, moisture and heat. They lead to the oxidation of fats, the destruction of vitamins, and even to decay of the products that make up the feed.

According to standard rules, wet food is placed in a dog bowl in such an amount that the animal can eat it at a time, unused leftovers should be refrigerated (not in the freezer!). At room temperature, they can be no more than 4 hours, in the refrigerator - up to a day (some manufacturers indicate a period of use of 3 days). The best option for storage containers is a tight-fitting container made of glass or food-grade plastic.

Attention! Before giving the animal canned food that was stored in the refrigerator, it should be warmed to room temperature. Pets cannot give cold food!

Dry food after opening the original packaging can be given to animals for 4-5 weeks, for some types of croquettes, in the manufacture of which synthetic preservatives were used, it amounts to 10 weeks. This period is usually indicated on the packaging. Keep the contents of the package in a tightly closed container, this will protect the concentrate from moisture, oxygen and light. It is best to use special containers for this purpose, and it is desirable to place the feed there together with the factory packaging.

1. What is the difference between ACANA and ORIJEN?

The main differences are listed below:

3. Varieties of fresh meat

2. What class are ACANA and ORIJEN feeds?

Currently, there is a spontaneously developed classification system for pet food for industrial production. She does not have exact, legislative or scientifically developed standards, and conditionally divides the feed into three groups according to the quality of the raw materials used, processing and meeting the nutritional needs of the animal: “economy”, “premium” and “super premium”. The “super-premium” group additionally distinguishes “holistic” feed - as the best in the “super-premium” class. Many experts consider Acana and Orijen feeds to be just them, but this is wrong. Champion Petfoods, a Canadian manufacturing company itself, attributes its Acana and Orijen products to a new, patented class - biologically appropriate nutrition. And this is exactly how these feeds should be classified.

They are distinguished by a high meat content and the use of various sources of animal protein. Most meat ingredients go to production fresh or raw. All this brings Acana and Orijen food to carnivore nutrition in the wild, increases the biological value of the food and allows you to minimize the amount of carbohydrates that are not typical for predators ’diet, because they receive vital energy from animal protein and fat.

3.Why does ACANA and ORIJEN contain so much protein? Is this harmful to my pet?

Since there are many myths about high protein foods, people probably contact our customer service team most often.Numerous studies conducted and published over the past 15 years have debunked the myth of high protein content (often spread by multinational and marketing companies that still produce low-protein cereal-based foods). The truth is simple - high protein foods are biologically appropriate for dogs and cats of all breeds. As close as possible in composition to the natural diet, as well as created taking into account the anatomical structure and physiological characteristics of dogs and cats, high-protein low-carbohydrate feeds provide an optimal level of animal health and well-being.

Note: read more about this.

4.How to store dry food?

Ideally, the feed should be stored indoors in a hermetically sealed container (tank or box with a lid) made of an inert material, such as food grade plastic. The food can also be stored in its original packaging, since the upper edge of the bag can be tightly folded, which ensures the tightness of the package after opening. Freezing food is not required. Ideal is storage at room temperature of 20-25 degrees Celsius. Long-term storage at higher temperatures increases oxidation and shortens shelf life. Exposure to light also contributes to the oxidation process, so you should store the product in a dark, cool place.

5.How to determine the shelf life of dry food?

The expiration date (BB ...) is indicated on the back of the package at the top. Date format on the package: day / month / year. The shelf life from the moment of release and packaging of feed is 18 months. After this date, subject to the correct storage conditions, the product remains safe for use, but some indicators of the guaranteed analysis may not correspond to the declared ones, for example, vitamins. The manufacturer recommends using the opened package within 3-4 months.

6. What should be the packaging: vacuum or not vacuum?

Champion Petfoods, the food producer of Acana and Orijen, has no vacuum packaging! The bags can be dense, as if compressed, or they can be with some air inside - this does not affect the quality of the feed! The appearance of the package depends on atmospheric pressure, ambient temperature, as well as on the volume of air inside the package, which fell naturally during the packaging process. This question is commented in detail in the letter below:

7. What are the main tips for feeding dry food?

We recommend feeding animals twice a day. Just divide the daily feed rate into two doses with an interval between feedings of 8-12 hours. It is very important to observe the daily feeding rate indicated by the manufacturer on the food packaging. But since each animal is individual and has its own characteristics, it may be necessary to adjust the size of the portions to maintain optimal weight. Closely monitor the physical condition - the fatness of your dog or cat. If the pet looks too thin, slightly increase the daily rate. If it becomes more difficult to find the ribs in the pet, the daily portion needs to be slightly reduced. Obesity at any age can cause serious illness. Despite the fact that dogs or cats, begging for food, can quite convincingly demonstrate that they are hungry, it is best to be guided not by their feelings of pity, but by the “forms” and weight of your pet. A chubby pet is probably cute, but such a condition is extremely dangerous for his health. Excess weight can be a sign of obesity or diabetes, as well as have a negative effect on the musculoskeletal system and heart function. If you are in difficulty and do not know how to determine the right portion, just call or write to us!

It is also important to remember about drinking.Your pet's body is about 70% water, which is vital for the functioning of cells. In fact, water is more important to your dog or cat than any other nutrient. In the heat, as well as in case of illness, especially with diarrhea, the importance of water increases many times. Therefore, make sure that your pet always has access to clean and fresh water, you need to change it at least 1-2 times a day.

8. How to determine the daily feeding rate for ACANA and ORIJEN?

To determine the daily feeding rate, use the special table that is printed on the back of the bag of food. The second way to find the table: open on our website a detailed description of the feed, where at the very bottom of the page you can find it and calculate the feeding rate depending on the parameters of your pet. Pay attention to the peculiarities of feeding pregnant and lactating bitches, as well as puppies and kittens (information is listed under the table).

Since each animal is unique, feeding rates may vary. Use this table as a guide. Monitor the weight of your pet and adjust the dosage to determine the optimal value (described in more detail in the previous paragraph).

9.My pet is losing weight / getting fat - what should I do?

In most cases, this is due to improper dosage during feeding, that is, your pet does not eat up, or vice versa. The solution is to determine the optimal daily feeding rate for your animal. And this can only be done empirically: if you notice that your pet is gaining excess weight (visually or according to the data for his breed), then reduce the daily intake, if you do not eat up and lose weight, then increase the feeding rate. Then follow the balance, i.e. your pet was fed up but did not gain weight or lose weight. As mentioned earlier, the daily feeding rate specified by the manufacturer for each feed is only an approximate average statistical reference point, a kind of starting point for selecting an individual dosage.

10.How to switch from another feed to ACANA and ORIJEN?

Animals are often fed the same food. This means that a sharp change in feed can cause digestive problems associated with the adaptation of the digestive system to new ingredients. Therefore, it is important to introduce new feed into the diet gradually. This approach will give your dog or cat time and opportunity to get used to a new feed, and also minimize possible digestive problems. If you are switching to ACANA and ORIJEN from a different brand of food, start with the proportion: 25% new feed + 75% old. Over the next three to five days, gradually change the ratio of feed per serving, i.e. gradually increase the amount of new feed and reduce the amount of old. At the end of this process, your pet will be fully transferred to the new feed. If you transfer, for example, from one type of ACANA to another, then this can be done immediately, without any preliminary preparations.

11. Is it possible to alternate different feeds?

Dogs and cats may have their own peculiarities and preferences in choosing food, but they do not feel the need for a variety of diet, unlike people. Therefore, there is no need to change food if your pet eats well, moves actively and has no health problems. However, sometimes we can’t buy the usual type of food on time and are forced to look for its analogues. It makes no sense to look for analogues among other brands, because not one of them matches Acana and Orijen in composition. For both dogs and cats, it is better to choose a replacement inside the same brand and one line (series) of food. If you transfer your pet to food from a different line, this should be done gradually, increasing the proportion of the new formula in relation to the old one. A sharp change in diet can lead to digestive upset, since the composition of the formulas, for example, in the ACANA Classics and Singles lines for dogs is significantly different. It is also not recommended to change the diet more often than once every 3-4 months.

12. Is it possible to resort to a mixed type of feeding?

We do not recommend a mixed type of pet food. The fact is that the composition of any dry food is balanced, and you know for sure that your pet receives all the necessary nutrients, vitamins and minerals in the right proportion . With mixed feeding (dry food + canned food or + goodies or + food from the table) this balance may be disturbed. Mixed feeding should be resorted to only if your pet categorically refuses to eat exceptionally dry food, loses weight and therefore requires additional feeding.

13. Can I use treats when feeding dry food?

As mentioned in the previous paragraph, for the digestion of domestic animals, feeding only dry food is optimal. But if you want to encourage your pet during training or just pamper yourself with "delicious", then it is better to do this with the help of special treats. To avoid digestive problems, use treats of the same brand as dry food. The range of ACANA and ORIJEN also has a wide range of goodies:

14. Is it possible to feed pets “food from the table”?

Since this question requires detailed analysis, we recommend reading the following

15.How to train a puppy / kitten to dry food?

After breastfeeding, it is difficult for puppies and kittens to immediately switch to dry food. In addition, cracking hard granules also causes them some difficulties at first. Usually in such cases, resort to soaking dry food in water. This allows you to soften hard granules, and also enhances the smell of food, making it more attractive to your little pet. They do it this way: pour a pre-measured feed rate into a bowl, fill it with warm water (about 30-35 grams) for 10-15 minutes, but no more, because with prolonged soaking, the feed will turn into "porridge". Then the water is drained and the feed is ready to eat. An important point: they resort to soaking only at the initial stage of "accustoming" to dry food. In the future, this procedure should be abandoned, since cracking hard granules of feed is useful, since it is an additional prevention from plaque and stone.

16. It is difficult for my puppy / kitten to gnaw solid feed pellets - what should I do?

See the answer in paragraph 15.

17. Why are there differences in the appearance of the feed pellets?

The color and size of the pellets in Acana and Orijen feeds is determined by production technology. These feeds are a low-carb, high-protein product made from fresh Canadian ingredients. This composition determines small differences in the size, color and shape of the feed pellets, because half of the meat included in the feed is added during extrusion in the form of fresh minced meat. To explain such differences, it would be appropriate to compare pet food with conventional cutlets. The option that you buy in the store is always the same - both in shape, size, and consistency, and your own creation will be unique each time. Exactly the same granules can be seen in feed, the production of which is based on the use of processed dried raw materials in the form of flour, so the mixture entering the extruder is always uniform, and the granules are standard. In the manufacture of biologically appropriate feeds, fresh meat and fish in different batches, with its consistently high quality, may have some differences, which is the reason for the difference in granules that you see in the package. These differences are further evidence of the high quality of Acana and Orijen feeds.

18. Fresh and raw meat in the feed - what is the difference?

Fresh and raw meat is far from the same. These two concepts are crucial for Champion Petfoods, the food producer Acana and Orijen, which uses only fresh meat in its production.Let's clarify what these concepts mean.

Raw meat could be subject to freezing followed by thawing, and even canning with chemicals. Fresh meat excludes freezing and the content of preservatives in it. In contrast to most industrial pet foods, fresh Canadian meat is used directly on the day it arrives at the factory to make Acana and Orijen diets. It is clear that using fresh meat, Champion Petfoods can guarantee the exceptional quality of feed produced.

19. Is ACANA and ORIJEN suitable for my neutered cat / sterilized cat?

When choosing the type of food, it is important to know that sterilized animals are too predisposed to urolithiasis. Any food Acana and Orijen is suitable for castrated animals, because they are strictly controlled by the level of magnesium and phosphorus, thus they help prevent the development of urolithiasis. The medicinal herbs and cranberries present in Acana and Orijen feeds are also favorable for the prevention of IBD in castrates. The question is also often asked: will a high protein content in feed lead to the development of ICD? The answer is NO! Since the amount of protein in the feed is not related to the appearance and development of ICD.
Another problem associated with sterilization is obesity. Not all animals are predisposed to this, but for many this question is very relevant. Champion Petfoods produces biologically appropriate, low-carbohydrate feeds to help maintain your pet's optimal weight while meeting the feeding standards on the feed packaging.

20. What kind of food is suitable for dogs suffering from food allergies?

To answer this question, you must first find out what exactly (which product or ingredient) is the source of food allergies. To do this, it is necessary to pass the appropriate tests in the veterinary clinic and on their basis to get specialist advice. Next, a diet is selected that eliminates the "dangerous" ingredient. This is the fastest and most correct way, which in most cases will help relieve the suffering of your pet. Another option is to select a diet by eliminating different types of consumed ingredients. In this case, you and your pet will have to be patient, because sometimes this process drags on for months ... But there is good news that will help narrow the search for a suitable diet: as a rule, in most pets, an allergic reaction causes chicken protein, namely chicken meat / chicken, offal based on it and chicken egg. Therefore, the basis of the so-called hypoallergenic feeds includes lamb meat or various types of fish, which are rarely a source of food allergies. When choosing food, it is always important to remember that each animal is unique and can have its own individual reactions to a particular type of food. And often this can only be determined empirically.

21. What kind of food is suitable for dogs with sensitive digestion?

Trying to take into account all the features of our pets, Champion Petfoods has developed a line of food for dogs with sensitive digestion - this is the Acana "Singles" series. The peculiarity of this line is that the feed contains only one source of protein (50% of the composition) and one source of carbohydrates (another 50%), which greatly facilitates the process of digestion and assimilation of feed ingredients. Also excluded from the composition are the components that most often cause allergies: chicken, eggs and dairy products. There is also no wheat, corn, or other “harmful” grains for dogs in these feeds. The Acana "Singles" series includes the following foods:

22. Fluid stool after feeding. What to do?

If the animal has loose stools, it is first necessary to check the dosage: plentiful, poorly formed stools are observed during overfeeding. It is also necessary to analyze the diet and exclude from it all products and additives, except for feed and water. If this does not change the situation, then your pet has an individual intolerance to some of the components of the feed, in which case it is recommended to consult a veterinarian or nutritionist - a specialist will help you determine which ingredient should be excluded from the diet, and will recommend a new feed.

23. Is it necessary to give vitamins or special nutritional supplements in addition to the dry food ACANA and ORIJEN?

As has been said many times, the composition of Acana and Orijen feeds is carefully balanced and contains all the nutrients, vitamins and trace elements necessary for your pet, so there is no strict need to give anything extra. The exception is those cases when supplements are necessary for medical reasons and they are prescribed by a veterinarian according to the results of the examination.

Dry food is the choice of millions of pet dog owners around the world. Which brands of dry food are considered the best, you can find out from. But in order for this type of food to be as safe and proper as possible, please adhere to the following storage rules.

Proper storage of dry food is not only protection against rodents, insects and dust mites, but also from their possible traces of life: for example, bacteria that cause leptospirosis in dogs, or insect eggs. And if moisture gets into the feed, then mites and toxic mold may start up in it (when the feed seems to be dusted with dust). Improper storage of dry dog food can cause gastrointestinal problems and even lead to severe food poisoning.

The main condition for proper storage is dryness and tightness. Immediately after opening the bag, pour the food into a dry, clean and tightly closed container. If the bag is small and equipped with a zip latch, it is not necessary to sprinkle food, the main thing is to always close it tightly. Oxygen, all kinds of bacteria living in the air, sun rays - all this extremely negatively affects the taste and quality indicators of the feed. By oxidizing, it becomes tasteless, and the animal may simply refuse to eat it. That is why we do not recommend buying dry food by weight, especially in those stores where open packages are simply standing on the floor. If dry food is exposed to direct sunlight and air, then this threatens with the loss of all useful properties, taste and makes it unsuitable for use.

- One of the best solutions, especially if you buy large bags. As a rule, such containers are made of an inert material that does not affect the taste and chemical characteristics of the feed, and can protect the feed from possible rodents, insects, mold and oxidation. And in the case of especially shy dogs that gnaw packages of food, also from them.

So, the basic rules for storing dry dog food:

  • The main condition for proper storage is room temperature or slightly cool temperature (18-20 degrees is considered optimal), darkness, dryness and tightness.
  • If the manufacturer’s packaging has a reliable zip fastener, it is not necessary to use an additional container. In all other cases, store the food in a glass, plastic or tin container, preferring reliable and trusted brands.
  • DO NOT keep the bag open and accessible for free access to oxygen, dust, sunlight, bacteria, rodents, and more.
  • The container or packaging with dry food should NOT be exposed to direct sunlight, and should be near heat sources.
  • DO NOT store dry food in the refrigerator: moisture and odors from your refrigerator, as well as possible bacteria and microbes located on thermally unprocessed products, falling into dry food can be dangerous for your pet.
  • Always read the manufacturer's recommendations for storing feed on the packaging.
