Propagation of ficus by cuttings - how to cultivate a flower of family well-being?

Ficus is a fairly common indoor plant. There are many varieties of this unpretentious flower. And everyone, even a beginner, a grower can propagate ficus at home.

Everyone can get such thickets at home.

Ficus Benjamin

The first species, which we will talk about breeding, is Benjamin's ficus. Its propagation by apical cuttings is the easiest and most affordable way.

If the plant has shiny, strong leaves, then everything is fine.

  1. Cutting is better in spring or summer, when the plant is growing actively.
  2. Cut apical shoots about 10 cm high with three pairs of leaves. The bottommost leaflets must be removed.
  3. Prepare the soil - a mixture of earth with sand or peat with perlite. Pour it into the pot.

The stalk does not require a large pot for itself.

To create a greenhouse, plastic bottles and plastic bags will be useful.

  • Roots appear in one and a half to two weeks.
  • After the appearance of the roots, we plant a young plant in a small pot (10-12 cm in diameter). The first few days we also cover it with a plastic bag.
  • In order for Benjamin's ficus to please you for many years, several conditions must be observed.

    • One of the main conditions is good lighting, ambient light.
    • The temperature in the room is 25–28 ° C warm in the summer and about +15 in the winter.
    • Remember - ficuses do not tolerate both overdrying and waterlogging of the earth in a pot.
    • Wipe the leaves often with a damp cloth, removing dust from them.

Gently wipe the surface of the ficus leaves.

    • Young ficuses transplant every year in spring. The new pot is bought in two sizes larger than the previous.
    • Older plants (more than one meter high) should be replanted less frequently. For an earthen coma extracted from a pot, replace part of the old soil with fresh.
    • Try to use light and nutritious soil.
    • It is good to combine top dressing with watering: just add fertilizer to irrigation water.

At each watering, enrich the soil of the plant with fertilizer.

    • Alternate fertilizer irrigation with rainwater. In this way, you can maintain a low level of salts in the soil.

Follow these simple conditions is not difficult. And the plant will thank you for this magnificent growth and healthy appearance.

If you want to engage in the reproduction of gloxinia, then you need to familiarize yourself with the information presented in the next article.

    Ficus rubbery

This type of ficus with large leathery leaves was grown by our great-grandmothers. One of the most common varieties of rubber ficus is Ficus Robusta. It is unpretentious, feels great in room conditions. To obtain a lush plant, in the spring, carry out the formation of the crown. To increase the lateral buds, we cut off the tops. The resulting cuttings are used to propagate ficus.

This type of ficus is interesting in the unusual color of the leaves.

    Propagation by cuttings

This method is the most common.

    1. Cuttings can be cut all spring until June.
    2. Cut the apical stalk about 15 cm long. You can take stem cuttings - a section of the stem with three leaves.
    3. Remove the lower leaves for better rooting.
    4. Carefully roll the other leaves into a loose tube, fasten it with an elastic band. This will prevent rapid dehydration of the cuttings.
    5. Hold the stalk a little in water to drain the milky juice.

Water procedures are necessary for the appearance of roots.

Soon this baby will turn into a big, beautiful ficus.

    Propagation by air layering

If the stem of the ficus is very bare at the base, use the method of reproduction by air layering.

    1. Choose a straight long shoot. If there are extra leaves where we want to get layering, remove them.
    2. With a sharp blade, make two cuts on the shoot 3 cm wide between them, strip the bark between them.
    3. Powder the cleaned surface with Kornevin.

Visual instruction in this complex matter will not be superfluous.

      • Rubber ficus should be kept in good light. Otherwise, the shoots stretch, weaken, and the leaves turn pale.

    Ficuses love big airspace.

      • In the summer, it is advisable to feed him every two weeks with a solution of universal fertilizer.
      • Water in the summer should be plentifully daily, often spray with water, wipe the leaves with a damp cloth. In winter, water less frequently when the topsoil is dried.

Pick a pot proportional to the size of the plant.

    • Transplant this type of ficus in two to three years, using a pot three to four times the size of the old one.

    Lyric Ficus

This type of ficus resembles rubber-bearing. But it differs from it by leaves - they are with wavy edges, very large, shiny, dark green.

Lyre-shaped ficus, like rubber-bearing ones, is propagated by stem cuttings or a leaf with a heel (the heel is the lignified part of the stem at the base of the leaf), as well as by air layers.

Ficus lyre-shaped at home is more moody than other ficuses. And if the conditions are not close to ideal, he simply drops the leaves. So, ficus lyre:

    • Loves ambient light.
    • Watering in summer is plentiful, in winter rare.
    • Likes frequent spraying.

    • It does not tolerate overdrying of soil in a pot.
    • In winter, the ambient temperature is 15 ° C heat. At other times, from 18 to 30 ° C.
    • Transplant strictly in early spring.

Spring is the beginning of a new life.

    • A new pot should not be much larger than the old.
    • Soil is a mixture of peat, sand and perlite.

    Ficus microcarp (ficus small-fruited)

    This "tree" is very impressive.

One of the most interesting types of ficus is ficus microcarp. It easily and quickly grows large rhizomes. Therefore, this flower is interesting for beginner bonsai lovers.

Ficus microcarp can be propagated by apical cuttings, air layers, seeds and part of the root. We have already talked about the first two methods, so we will focus on reproduction by seeds and spine.

    Sowing seeds

    1. Buying seeds is quite difficult. If you still purchased seeds, sow them in moist sphagnum moss mixed with peat.

Growing a plant from scratch is no easy task.

If leaflets appeared, then you can breathe a sigh of relief.

Propagation by a part of the root

    1. Harvest the root stalk. Plant it in the soil, leaving 2–2.5 cm above the surface.

This type of reproduction is quite effective.

I want to say right away that it’s very difficult to get powerful roots, such as the plants purchased in the store, with any form of propagation of this ficus. It will take several years to wait. Therefore, be patient.

Florists - fans about the propagation of ficus

At meetings of gardeners, the topic of reproduction of favorite plants is always present.

Here is what an experienced ficus lover said: “When I acquired my first ficus (it was Robusta ficus), naturally, I wanted to propagate it. I cut off the tops. There were three of them, so I experimented. I planted two cuttings in a substrate, covering it with a plastic bag, and one just put it in water.

In the soil, the stalk rooted without any problems. But in the water began to rot. I had to clean the stalk from rot and plant it in the soil. For comparison, I took a photo of the rooting of cuttings in the soil and in water. And she concluded that ficus cuttings are best rooted in a loose, light substrate. ”

Another grower shared his experience in caring for plants:

“Often, beginner growers complain that after buying a ficus, his leaves turn yellow and fall. There may be several reasons for this:

    1. The plant undergoes adaptation to the conditions of your particular room. Help him by spraying the leaves with a weak solution of a stimulant (Epin, Zircon).
    2. The plant just flooded. It is urgent to dry the soil.
    3. Dry air in the room. Frequent (once or twice a day) spraying with settled water will help.
    4. The result of pests. It is necessary to carry out the treatment with appropriate drugs.
    5. If the plant is placed in the open sun, yellowing and falling of leaves may be caused by sunburn. Shade the plant.
    6. Sudden changes in temperature. Maintain a constant air temperature. ”

    What conclusions can be drawn?

Ficus is an unpretentious, easy-to-care indoor flower. The most affordable and reliable methods of propagation of any ficus are cuttings and aerial layering. It is better to carry out reproduction operations in the spring, when plants are actively growing.

Each type of ficus will be appropriate in the interior of any room. And if we take into account the ability of many of them to purify the air of harmful substances, the need to purchase this home flower becomes obvious.

    Reviews and comments

I also have ficus. The usual one with small leaves. I grew it from a small branch with three leaves, which I quietly pinched from a neighbor. First, I put this twig in a glass with a solution of root. When the roots began to appear - transplanted into the ground. So that the plant does not grow thin and long, I constantly trim it.

I have a ficus of Benjamin, which my friend has already asked for from me. Well, so that she had such beauty) She told me that it is enough for reproduction if I cut off the apical cuttings.

My ficus Benjamin is about 8 years old, this summer all his leaves turned yellow and fallen, he watered and sprayed the plant regularly. Green leaves appeared at the ends of the branches, but then they also turned yellow and fell, now the tree is almost bare. Is it possible to try to propagate it in the fall by cuttings?

But I didn’t succeed in rooting ... Maybe because I didn’t make the greenhouse and decided to propagate it in the fall, closer to winter 🙁
But then I bought it immediately ready, so as not to wait 5 years when it becomes big and beautiful .. On the whole I’m happy! I'm growing well.

Preparatory procedures - harvesting cuttings and forming roots in water

Regardless of the choice of plant - Benjamin's ficus, rubber-bearing or dwarf ficus - the process of preparing for propagation is the same. The harvesting of cuttings begins in the spring and continues until the beginning of June during the period of active growth of the plant. A stalk with a length of 10 to 15 cm is cut at an angle with a sharp knife or secateurs. The choice of the place from which planting material will be obtained is not so important. It can be both the top of the plant and the stem shoot. The main thing is that the ficus is not young, otherwise it will not multiply and take root. Choose a flower with lignified shoots.

In the section, you will see how milky juice begins to stand out from the stem. This adhesive clogs the paths, covering the cut with a dense cork, which prevents the young plant from developing. Therefore, we wash the cuttings until the sticky residues disappear completely or leave them soaked for a couple of hours in warm water. Next, we dry the prepared sections in the open air for 2 hours. Getting to the rooting. The easiest option is to put the prepared twigs in the water. To make them quicker to root, make 2-3 vertical cuts along the base line, leave only the top leaves, and remove the bottom ones.

Biostimulants, for example, 2-3 drops of Epin, help speed up the rooting process. Activated carbon also copes well with the task. It is enough to crush 1 tablet and add it to a container of water.

Ficus Benjamin and other representatives of this plant take root well at a temperature of 25 ° C and an air humidity of 80%. To achieve such indicators helps create a mini-greenhouse. To do this, we put a plastic bag, a plastic cup or a bottle scrap on top of the container. As water evaporates, add liquid. Rooting ficus on average takes 3-4 weeks. First, white growths appear at the base, from which roots are later formed. When they reach 2-3 cm, transplant ficus into the nutrient soil. It is not worth it to overdo the plant in water - its roots will begin to rot, to grow a healthy and beautiful flower will not work.

Direct rooting in the nutrient substrate - sequence of actions

Ficus with large and dense leaves went to many gardeners from our grandmothers. This is a rubbery ficus. Along with the "grandmother's flower", Benjamin's ficus also gained popularity. This plant propagates by layering, leaves and cuttings. To obtain planting material, it is not necessary to specially cut the branches. When forming a crown in spring, do not throw out the cut stems, but use them for propagation.

We start rooting with the preparation of the substrate. For cultivation to be successful, the soil must be light and nutritious. Combine land with sand, peat with perlite. Our advice is a mixture of turf and sheet land with peat and sand in a ratio of 2: 2: 1: 0.5. If you did not root the cuttings in water beforehand, rinse them under running water to get rid of milky juice, leave to dry for 2 hours, and then treat the cut with crushed activated carbon. In the prepared substrate, make a hole and deepen the stalk into it by one knot. We moisturize the soil with a weak solution of potassium permanganate to protect the plant from fungal infections.

Create a familiar mini-greenhouse. We put a plastic bag on top of the pot and send the cuttings to take root in a warm sunny place. As the soil dries, we moisturize it. After 21 days, new leaflets should form - this is a sign of successful rooting. After this, the mini-greenhouse can be gradually removed so that the young ficus gets used to new conditions. Start small by puncturing a few holes in a polyethylene or plastic bottle.

How to care for a young plant so that it lives well?

How to propagate ficus, you already know, it's time to talk about the proper care of it after rooting. Where to start is lighting. The plant loves a good stream of sunlight, but does not tolerate direct ultraviolet rays. The best option in this case is scattered light, which will not allow the young ficus to stretch and weaken, while maintaining the natural shape and color of the leaves. With a lack of lighting, use the backlight for seedlings. Temperature is another important factor. To alternate active growth and dormancy in summer, the room temperature should be 25–28 ° C, and in winter –15–18 ° C. This rule applies to all species without exception, including the ficus Benjamin.

    Seedlings of young ficus

Water is the life-giving force of ficus, so keep a balance, avoiding waterlogging and dryness. Pay special attention to watering in the summer, while simultaneously wiping the leaves of the ficus with a damp cloth and spraying it from the spray bottle. Combine substrate moisture with top dressing. During the period of active growth (spring-summer), feed the plant every 14 days with a solution of universal fertilizers for indoor plants.

Ficus has its history from the time of the prehistoric animals.Initially, they were isolated as a class of parasites, since the bush has the peculiarity of attaching to trees, like a vine, to braid and eat at its expense.

But over time, some species of the original flower were domesticated and are now successfully growing independently in pots on window sills.

Reproduction of ficus leaf at home

Wild species in wildlife can grow up to 40 meters in height and up to 5 in width, have tree-like rhizomes and live under the scorching sun. At home, the flower in the most spacious rooms grows to a maximum of 3 meters.

The inhabitant of window sills is found both in the form of a tree, and in the guise of a bush. If more than one sprout is placed in the pot, you can form a bizarre weave of trunks. Stems become tree-like with age. The leaves have an oblong shape, grow more than 50 cm in length.

Ficus is not whimsical at all, but there are some conditions that can negatively affect the external and internal state of a green friend:

    • Drafts - does not like the movement of air. Therefore, even in the summer it is more expedient to leave it indoors.
    • Hypothermia. The minimum comfortable temperature is 18 C. With a decrease in this indicator, the leaves first fall, and the flower dies completely.
    • Excessive watering. With uncontrolled irrigation, rotting of the roots is possible, and as a result the death of the entire bush.
    • Direct sunlight. In case of midday light - the leaves get burns, the neat appearance is lost.

    How does ficus breed?

In nature, numerous species of this family, of course, bear fruit. At home, only the ficus of the microcarp propagates by seed. Rubber-bearing varieties are deprived of this ability in the same way as Benjamin's ficus. Propagation of these plants can only be done by the vegetative method, that is, part of the shoot.

    How to prepare cuttings?

Make it easy. Reproduction of ficus will be successful if you do everything carefully and follow the rules. The branch should be cut with a sharp knife, directing it at an angle to the stem. You can do this with a blade. It is better not to use scissors: they leave torn and wrinkled edges, tissues are injured, and roots form slowly. The prominent milky juice must be washed off, otherwise after solidification it will interfere with root formation. The length of the handle is about 15 cm. It is better to remove the lower leaves; if they are large, leave the remaining leaves into a tube and fix in this position. This is necessary so that the plant loses less moisture.

    Ficus leaf propagation

From one branch of ficus you can get several young plants. Their number is limited by the number of leaves, that is, nodes. It is in these places that the axillary buds awaken, from which new shoots develop. It should be noted that one leaf without a node can give roots. But without the plants, the plant does not develop. When propagating ficus with a leaf with a part of the stem, the upper cut is made horizontal and the lower cut is made at an angle. Under the node you need to leave most of the internodes. The sheet must be folded into a tube, secured with an elastic band or electrical tape.

    Rooting cuttings

The prepared material can be placed in water or immediately into the ground. When rooting in water, it is preferable to use dark dishes, since light contributes to the propagation of microscopic algae. At the same time, water quality is deteriorating, and the propagation of ficus may result in failure. To prevent decay, the leaves should not get wet. After the roots appear, you need to plant the plant in a pot.
It is better to cover the ficus with a jar or film, create a small greenhouse for it. Escape needs moist air. When the first new leaf appears, you can open a young ficus.

Reproduction at home can not do without good soil. To obtain a suitable substrate, peat, sand and vermiculite should be mixed in equal proportions. It is better to disinfect the soil by warming it in a steam bath for half an hour. If the stalk has a length of several centimeters, it should be fixed in a pot. To do this, a peg is inserted into the folded sheet, which is reliably buried in the ground.

    Ficus propagation by air layering

Varieties with variegated leaves are poorly rooted. The low chlorophyll content makes them more sensitive to any test. But a beautiful appearance is more important than the vagaries of plants such as, for example, Benjamin's ficus. Reproduction with a kind of insurance will help to get a new copy. In nature, many ficuses form aerial roots. There is even such a life form - banyan tree. Many roots hang from the crown, which reach the soil, deepen, and gradually turn into peculiar trunks. It turns out one big tree-forest. You can use this feature of ficuses planted by nature at home. It is only necessary to create suitable conditions.

Cutting the stalk is not necessary, we will form the root system on the branch of a large ficus. To do this, under the node on the stem, you need to make a vertical incision 0.5 cm long. To speed up the process, you can stick a match in it, sprinkled with Kornevin powder. Next, we attach a substrate of wet sphagnum to the branch, cover it with a film and tie it. It will take several months to form a sufficiently strong root system. Then you can cut off the layers and put in a pot. This method is good in that you can get quite a large ficus right away. Reproduction (photos are presented here) by air layers is less traumatic. A ready-made strong instance with a good root system is planted. If ficus propagation is applied by cuttings, the new plant will reach this size in a few years.

If the ficus is quite old, has lost the lower leaves and has lost its attractiveness, you can rejuvenate it by obtaining an airy root system. To do this, cut the ring from the bark from the trunk, the strip width is 2-3 cm. You can make shallow oblique notches. Wounds should be covered with wet moss and covered with a film. When a ficus is transplanted with new roots, it does not get much smaller, but its appearance improves. In this way, you can rejuvenate ficus. Reproduction at home, as you see, is a simple process, you only need to periodically moisten the moss.

    How to accelerate root formation?

It is useful to fertilize both rubbery varieties and Benjamin's ficus. Reproduction of these plants is also more effective and faster with the use of special tools.

Cuttings cost about a month in a jar of water. During this time, roots are formed. They develop from callus - the tissue that is responsible for the growth of the plant and is formed in damaged places. To accelerate the propagation of ficus by cuttings, you need to make shallow scratches on the part of the cuttings that will be in the ground. Special preparations can be used to stimulate rooting, for example, Kornevin. If you put the cuttings in water, then before that you need to soak them in a solution of the drug. When rooting in the soil, the sections are dusted with a powdery stimulant.

    Care and watering

Ficuses are mostly unpretentious. They need a lot of light, but some varieties should not be placed on the windowsill. The best place is near the east or west window. Illumination should be uniform. Ficuses with variegated leaves need brighter light. White or pink areas do not contain chlorophyll. With insufficient lighting, the leaves may lose their beauty and turn green.

Ficuses have pests and diseases. To avoid them, you need to moisten the air. Dryness contributes to the reproduction of parasites such as spider mites, thrips and others. Therefore, spraying for ficus is mandatory, especially in the summer. In order not to start a scabbard or a false scaffold, you need to bathe the plant once a week under a warm shower, or at least wipe the leaves and stems. Earth, on the contrary, cannot be overmoistened. Between watering, the upper layers should dry out. If there is stagnation of water in the pot, the roots will rot and the plant will die.

Improper care weakens the ficus. Reproduction at home is only possible when the plant was originally strong and healthy.

    Some useful tips

First, take care of the big ficus. Juice can flow out of a fresh slice for a long time. Therefore, it should be sprinkled with crushed charcoal or pressed with a cotton swab.

Secondly, the young plant must be put on a uniformly lit place. With a lack of light, internodes are stretched, and the ficus takes on an unaesthetic appearance.

A permanent place for a young plant must be determined in advance. Ficus does not like permutations, especially species with more delicate foliage. Stress strongly affects the plant. Leaves may turn yellow and fall from changes in lighting, too high or low temperature.

When rooting in the substrate, first you need to hold the cuttings for about two hours in water so that a crust from frozen juice does not form.

Any plant needs, first of all, care. Reproduction of ficus will be successful if you do not forget to look after it: moisten moss for aerial roots, change water when rooting cuttings, monitor the development of young shoots, form a beautiful crown. Home plants always please a caring owner with their health and beauty.

    Rooting method

How to root ficus? When the planting material is ready, you need to decide how the rooting of the stepson will take place, namely:

    1. With water
    2. Immediately into the ground.

Reproduction of ficus in another way (photo)

A 100% way to grow roots on a leaf is to put it in water with a root growth stimulator to sprout them faster. After 2 weeks, white pimples of nascent roots begin to appear on the stem.

Already from this moment, you can move the bush to the ground - then the delicate roots will not be damaged during planting. At the same time, there is a risk that the roots may not develop and rot. Therefore, it is more advisable to wait for roots 1-1.5 cm long. When planting, be careful not to break the nascent root system.

A more reliable method, but a longer one, is to plant just cut sheet immediately in the ground. Before planting, flower growers recommend keeping the cuttings in water with an activator of root growth for 12 hours or adding in powder form to the pot.

Then put the stepson in soft, airy soil. When planting, the stalk is completely immersed in the ground to a sleeping kidney. Experts advise carefully folding the sheet with a tube, gently tied with a thread or electrical tape, so as not to damage the surface.

Insert a strong support inside the tube, such as a knitting needle or a Chinese wand, thereby securing the correct position of the flower. The stepson is considered to have taken root when a new growth point activates its activity and develops.

    Leaf care during rooting

    Ficus grown from leaf

Before starting the breeding process, it is best 1 day before the event to carefully water the bush. It is necessary that the leaves are saturated with moisture. Only after that start the operation to cut off the leaves of the ficus.

For planting the cuttings, both with the roots formed, and immediately after the cut, it is necessary to prepare the soil.

It mixes in equal proportions (1: 1: 1: 1) sand, peat, charcoal and turf. Or purchase soil suitable for ficus in a store. Before transshipment of the process into a pot, the earth should be definitely roasted in the oven.

Drainage (expanded clay) is placed in the pot at the bottom. Then used tea bags are stacked - they serve as a sponge for water, which retains moisture and prevents the soil from drying out. They do not tamp the soil - when it is watered, it will settle itself. Then, if necessary, you can add the desired volume.

After a young bush is placed in a flowerpot, he should create favorable living conditions. To do this, cover the pot with either polyethylene, or a plastic cup or bottle, simulating a greenhouse. In a glass, several holes are made for air ventilation. Such measures serve as a good start for the development of a full-fledged flower:

    • constant optimum temperature is maintained,
    • no cold air currents
    • sufficient oxygen supply.

The greenhouse should be periodically opened so that the stepson gets used to normal living conditions. During these periods, it is necessary to water well, after 7-10 days to feed with fertilizer. Repeat the addition of minerals should be when the first sprout appears.

I have a large garden and a vegetable garden, several greenhouses. I love modern methods of plant cultivation and soil mulching, I share my experience.

Soil disinfection is an important point in planting, which protects it from diseases and pests that may be in the soil. But, if the thermal method was used, it is impossible to plant a plant immediately after disinfection.

The fact is that along with harmful bacteria and spores, beneficial microflora dies. Therefore, after the described procedure, you need to let the earth stand for 1.5-2 weeks, so that beneficial microorganisms reappear there. If the soil was treated with boiling water, it is also better to let it stand.

If there is no waiting time, you can treat the soil mixture with a solution of manganese, the drug Fitosporin. A very effective remedy is dry boric acid. It can be diluted in hot water in a proportion of 2 grams per 10 liters and treated with a substrate.

We recommend using old sawdust as an alternative to tea bags. They can also be added directly to the soil mixture as a cultivator to improve oxygen access to the rhizome.

As for fertilizers, it is better to start applying them only when the flower is completely rooted in a new container. Sometimes a week is not enough, you need to look at the state of the plant. Usually, the survival rate is visible by the state of the crown, the leaves should be elastic and richly green.

During this period, you should not use organics, the dose should be small, and such funds are sometimes too concentrated, you can not guess with the dilution. We recommend using a complex mineral product.

Young sprout care - watering, lighting and temperature

Ficus loves good lighting, but not direct rays, but bright diffused light. Therefore, it is more advisable to put not on a windowsill, but in a darkened place. It is also not recommended to go to dark places, since the shoots will begin to branch in one direction, stretch to the light source, the leaves will sharply decrease in volume, become faded and inconspicuous.

The plant develops well at a temperature of 18 to 26 C. If the degree begins to rise, the leaves will dry. To avoid this, it is necessary to spray and wipe the leaves with a damp cloth. If the flower is irrigated with water with the addition of milk, then the leaves will be shiny, glossy.

Watering a young sprout should be regular - every 3-4 days. In summer, you should not withstand such an interval, and water as the soil dries. In winter, watering is reduced to 1 time per week.

It is necessary to feed the flower from March to October, with intensive growth and development of the crown - 4 times a month. In summer, it is necessary to alternate mineral and organic additives every 7-10 days. When transplanting, you should thoroughly feed the plant.

While watching a video, you will learn about the propagation of ficus leaf.

Thus, the propagation of ficus is an exciting activity. Propagation of stepchildren is possible in several ways, but the sprout is best taken root when rooting by a leaf. Growing and caring is so simple - the main thing is desire.

How to propagate ficus at home?

The best time for propagating ficus at home is from early April to late May. During this period, root formation occurs most rapidly, and the resulting young specimens develop at an accelerated pace.In winter, the plants are at rest, so the parts of the roots that are separated from it will not give.

Plant propagation methods are similar for all species and differ in small nuances. The main methods:

    • leaf
    • cuttings
    • air lay
    • part of the root.

First you need to prepare everything for the process itself, and for the subsequent location of young plants:

    • sharp knife or scissors. A blunt tool cannot be used to cut off parts of a plant. This will cause injuries hazardous to the mother plant and its parts,
    • special mixtures for germinating workpieces,
    • means for treating wounds: shredded charcoal or activated carbon,
    • root stimulants: Cornevin, heteroauxin,
    • soil for planting,
    • Warm place with diffused light access.

    How to root a shank?

Preparations for the propagation of ficus by this method are cut from the plant in the spring. Take the upper parts of the semi-lignified shoots. The length of the cuttings is 15 cm. Each should have 2-4 large sheets.

The process consists of the following steps:

    1. Closer to the node on the bottom of the workpiece make a cut at an angle of 45 degrees. The sheet immediately above this node is removed. All other leaves are cut to half length.
    2. The cutlery is placed in a glass with clean water for several hours to remove the milky juice that stands out. During the soaking of the workpiece, the water is changed several times.
    3. Then the slice is dried for 2-3 hours.
    4. For the process of root formation, the stalk is placed in water. It is better to take dishes that are opaque so that blue-green algae do not form under the influence of light.
    5. Roots on the workpiece are formed after 3-4 weeks. When their length reaches 4-5 cm, the stalk is planted in the soil. Ready-made mixes for ficus or self-made from sod and sheet soil, peat and sand (4: 4: 2: 1) are suitable.
    6. From above, the stalk is covered with a transparent cap to create greenhouse conditions. After the appearance of young leaves, the cap is removed.

Can it multiply by a large leaf?

This method is suitable exclusively for the propagation of species of ficus with large leaves. For example, rubber-bearing. The basic principles of rooting are identical to propagation by cuttings.

But this method has some nuances and features:

    1. A healthy, fully developed leaf with a part of the internode is cut from the mother plant. In the place of attachment of the leaf cuttings to the shoot is a sleeping kidney. Therefore, the clipping manipulation must be carried out very carefully.
    2. The prepared sheet is placed in a glass of water for 2-3 hours to remove milky juice. If this is not done, then the slice will be closed with a cork of dried juice and the roots will not be able to break through it.
    3. Unlike stem cuttings, leaf rooting is carried out in soil or a mixture of peat and sand. The slice is moistened with a root stimulant. Then powdered with crushed wood or activated carbon and 3-4 cm deep into the ground.
    4. To prevent increased evaporation of moisture, the sheet is twisted into a tube and fixed with an elastic band or adhesive tape. To sheet was located vertically, under it put a backup. Cover with a transparent top. To do this, a cup or a piece of plastic bottle is suitable.
    5. As soon as a sprout appears at the base after the formation of roots at the base, the cap is removed.

    Seed breeding

Sowing seeds is the longest and most unreliable way to get a new copy of ficus. Some sources contain information that such a method is suitable exclusively for the ficus Lyrat or Microcarp. However, any variety can be grown from seeds, the only problem is to find planting material.

The seeding procedure looks like this:

    1. Acquired seeds are soaked in a growth stimulator for a day. Suitable drugs are heteroauxin, kornevin, humate. Treated seeds are washed with running water.
    2. A loose substrate is prepared for sowing. Best suited for shop Ficus soil, which added 1/3 of the volume of large river sand.
    3. The prepared soil mixture is filled with flat, wide containers. Too deep dishes for sowing are not suitable, because the soil in them accumulates moisture, and the seeds can rot. In the lower part of the tank make drainage holes for the outflow of excess water.
    4. The soil surface in the containers is rammed, 5 mm deep grooves are made at a distance of 5 cm from each other.
    5. In the grooves in increments of 1.5 cm spread the seeds. From above they are lightly sprinkled with sand and sprayed with warm water from a spray bottle.
    6. Crops are covered with glass or film and set in a warm (23-25 ° C), bright place. Shelter is lifted every day for 10-15 minutes for ventilation.
    7. Shoots appear unevenly, but the shelter is removed only after all the sprouts have risen. With the advent of the first seedlings, the airing time of the tank is increased to 1-2 hours so that the greens receive the necessary amount of oxygen.
    8. After the first true leaflets appear on the seedlings, they are dived into separate pots.

    How to plant with layering?

Growing a layering directly on the stem of the mother plant is a convenient and effective method of propagation. It is recommended to use it for variegated species of ficuses:

    1. To form a layering, a straight section of the lignified stem is selected and leaves are removed from it.
    2. It makes an oblique incision to a third of the thickness. The wound is sprinkled with the powder of the drug Kornevin and a match is inserted into it.
    3. The incised part is wrapped with a piece of moistened sphagnum moss, then wrapped with plastic wrap.
    4. After some time, small roots will develop under the shelter. As soon as they fill the entire internal space of the greenhouse, cuttings are cut from the mother plant with a sharp knife and the film is removed.
    5. The shoot with regrown roots is ready for planting in the prepared soil.

What is the best way to propagate Benjamin?

For the propagation of ficus Benjamin, it is preferable to choose cuttings. The shoots of this species are thin, and the leaves are small. Therefore, other methods for obtaining a new plant are not suitable.

Cuttings are rooted in water. To increase the area of root formation, additional annular notches are made between the lower cut and the first internode. After the formation of roots, the blanks are planted in pots with a diameter of 10 cm.

    Landing: step by step instructions

The signal for planting rooted cuttings or leaves in a container for continuous cultivation is the formation of new leaves. Plants are planted in pots of small diameter and depth, filled with soil for ficus.

At the bottom of the pot lay a layer of drainage: fine gravel, expanded clay, or pieces of polystyrene foam. Be sure to have a hole at the bottom of the tank to drain excess water when watering. So that it does not become clogged with waking up soil, a fine-mesh mesh is placed under the drainage.

The rooted workpiece is placed in a pot and gradually sprinkled with soil. The substrate is rammed by tapping the walls of the pot. After planting the sprout, the soil is slightly moistened and the pot is set in a warm, bright place.

    How to care after rooting?

Young plants need to provide conditions as close as possible to the natural habitat of ficuses:

    • temperature 25-26 ° C,
    • bright lighting without direct sunlight,
    • humidity level 65-70%,
    • regular but moderate watering after drying of the topsoil by 2-3 cm.

Subject to the recommendations of experienced gardeners, the process of propagation of ficus is always successful and makes it possible to obtain new plant specimens in 2-3 months.

When is it best to propagate ficus

At room conditions, ficuses do not bloom, so they are propagated vegetatively. The best time for this is spring from early April to late May.

During this period, ficus cuttings most likely take root. Young plants rooted in spring will be able to grow stronger and grow noticeably before autumn.

    Apical cuttings

During the spring pruning of the tree, the cut upper parts of the shoots are formed, which can be rooted and young ficuses can be obtained.

Cuttings should be more than 15 cm in length and have 2-4 large leaves. The branches from which they were cut should be semi-lignified.

To prepare the ficus stalk for rooting, you need to cut its lower part at an angle of 45º as close as possible to the node. The lowest leaf growing from this node is cut with a knife, the remaining leaves are cut in half.

Prepared cuttings are placed in water for several hours so that the white juice does not freeze on the cut and does not interfere with root formation. After this, the cuttings need to be dried for 2-3 hours in the air. Then they are rooted in one of 2 ways.

    Methods of rooting cuttings

Ficus cuttings can be rooted in water or in the ground. The first method is the simplest. The cuttings are placed in a container of boiled water at room temperature so that their lower node is in the water. It is better to choose a container opaque or from dark glass so that blue-green algae that prevent root formation do not multiply in the water.

When rooting cuttings, it is necessary to maintain a temperature above 25ºС. High humidity helps root quickly. Usually the roots appear after 3-4 weeks. When they extend to 4-5 cm, cuttings can be planted in the ground.

Cuttings often root directly in the ground. To do this, you can take the standard ficus soil mixture, which contains turf and leaf soil, peat and sand in a combination of 4: 4: 2: 1.

Cuttings are also well rooted in a mixture of peat and sand in a 2: 1 ratio. To root, you need a container with moist soil.

Cuttings of ficus are buried in the ground by 1 knot and covered with plastic wrap on top or glass jars. The substrate should be moist, and the air temperature during rooting should not be lower than 25ºС.

Under such conditions, after about a month, young leaflets will appear on the cuttings. After that, you can gradually remove the film from them, so that they are used to the humidity in the city apartment. When the cuttings actively grow, they are transplanted into separate pots.

    Stem cuttings

A long cut shoot of ficus can be cut into pieces with 3-4 leaves. These stem cuttings can also be rooted. They are prepared in the same way as the apical cuttings, cutting the lower part at an angle and drying the cut in air.

Roots on stem cuttings form much more slowly than on apical, and many fragments of the stem do not give roots and disappear.

To increase the number of rooted stem cuttings, drugs can be used to improve root formation. If rooting occurs in water, the cuttings are soaked in a solution of the drug. If they are rooted in the ground, you need to powder the cut with a stimulating powder.

Propagation by cuttings with one leaf

Thick shoots of rubbery ficuses can be cut into short fragments with one node and one leaf. The lower cut of such cuttings is made at an angle in the middle of the lower internode, the upper one is in the middle of the upper internode.

The ficus leaf is rolled up into a tube and fixed with an elastic band or adhesive tape.

Prepared cuttings with one leaf root only in the ground. They are dug in the moist earth to the leaf petiole. The temperature for rooting them is the same as for rooting other cuttings. To create a constant humidity, the container with cuttings is covered with a film.

    Formation of air layers

Air layering is part of a ficus shoot with formed aerial roots that can be cut and planted in the ground.

To form air roots, 2 circular cuts are made on the ficus branch at a distance of 1-2 cm from each other. Bark between them is carefully removed, and the exposed area is sprinkled with powder for root formation.

After this, the slice is wrapped with wet moss and covered with a plastic wrap, which must be tied on both sides.

If the moss is kept moist, the branch will take root in this place, which will break through the film over time. After this, layering can be separated from the adult tree and planted in the ground.

Cuttings are the most common, but not the most effective method of propagating ficus.. Be sure some part of the cuttings is not rooted and disappears. But this is offset by a large number of them as a result of the forming spring pruning of the tree.
