A special type of terrarium is the aquaterrarium (lat. aqua - water), in which a significant part of the premises occupies a body of water. The water and ground parts are separated by a partition, or one of them is represented by a removable cuvette (with water or soil, respectively). Often the ground part is organized in the form of a hanging "island", large stones protruding from the water, driftwood, poured with a slope of the soil or in the form of a floating raft. The ratio of water and land parts depends on the lifestyle of animals. Water-ararariums are used for the maintenance of many tailed and tailless amphibians, semi-aquatic lizards and snakes, aquatic turtles, crocodiles and some invertebrates (for example, crabs).

Paludarium (from lat. palus - swamp) is a kind of greenhouse for growing aquatic, near-water and hygrophilous land plants and keeping animals that require high humidity. It is a species or synonym for aquaterrarium.

For the maintenance of fully aquatic species of reptiles and amphibians, such as axolotl, spur frogs and some turtles, are used aquariums.

A terrarium for keeping insects, arachnids, terrestrial mollusks and some other invertebrates is called an insectarium, or insectarium (from lat. insectum - insect).

Volumes and sizes of terrariums

The sizes and volumes of terrariums can also be very diverse - from large specialized rooms in zoos, parks, botanical gardens and museums, to small mini-vessels with plants in our apartments.

Mini terrariums are becoming increasingly popular among home flower and plant growing. They can be of unusual shape and placed on tables and shelves - as a decorative attribute, as well as window sills, or - hanging from windows and under ceilings, attached directly to the inner wall of some room of our apartment and house. Mini-terrariums can be different not only in shape and size, but also placed in the form of compositions of several vessels with plants in one place. Such terrariums are made of whole glass and plastic - both by the factory method, and with the help of improvised means and utensils: defective incandescent lamps, decorative vases and laboratory flasks or spherical aquariums. Basically, such terrariums do not completely close if they do not accommodate any living creatures.

Terrarium Shapes

The shape of the terrariums is also different and depends on the species of animals that they contain. In form, they can be divided into:

Horizontal - a terrarium, the length of which is 2 or more times its height, and its width is approximately 1.5 times its height. Designed for keeping terrestrial animals that do not climb trees or vertical surfaces: many snakes and lizards, toads, land turtles and many other animals.

Vertical - a terrarium whose height is 2 or more times its length, and the width can be approximately equal to the length. In such a terrarium, strong branches of trees or driftwood, lianas are established, and the back wall is sometimes decorated with bark, cork, stone or ceramic tiles, which allows animals to climb. It is used for keeping animals such as chameleons, many geckos, green iguanas, tree snakes, tree frogs and other tree frogs.

Cubic - intermediate type. The length, width and height of such a terrarium are approximately equal. It is used to keep animals equally using both vertical and horizontal surfaces. When creating a thick layer of soil in a cubic terrarium, it can be used to contain burrowing species (for example, garrets and some skinks).

Spherical, round, conical - It is mainly used as a decorative part of premises with various moisture-loving plants (moss, fern, etc.) planted in such terrariums.

Scenery

Decorating terrariums is of no small importance, bringing them closer to the natural species of a particular climate - corresponding to the natural ecosystem of animals kept at home. Using the decorated polystyrene, natural stones, bentonite, tree bark and other material, micro-landscapes of a desert or forest, mountain range or plain are recreated.

Temperature

A prerequisite for the normal functioning of poikilothermic animals is a certain ambient temperature. Preferred temperatures vary between species of animals.

In the terrarium, two conventional sections are organized:

  • Warm corner (eng.hot spot ), in which heating elements will be placed and where animals will increase body temperature. The temperature in this area is higher than in the rest of the terrarium.
  • Cold cornerwhere the temperature is lower and the humidity is usually higher than in a warm corner.

The presence of two sites with different temperature and humidity (as well as an intermediate zone) allows animals to choose the necessary environmental parameters themselves.

Heated terrarium and can be carried out using:

  • Thermal cords that can be located both inside the terrarium and outside
  • Thermal stone
  • Thermal mats - flat heating elements
  • Ceramic heat emitters
  • Infrared lamps
  • Incandescent and mirror lamps, which combine the functions of heating and lighting

A thermometer is a necessary element of a terrarium, through which temperature is monitored. It is necessary to install thermometers in the warm and cold corners of the terrarium. In a cold corner, you can also use a thermometer combined with a hygrometer. A water thermometer is required in the aquaterrarium.

Humidity

Another important factor, especially for amphibians, is humidity.

To maintain a certain humidity are used:

  • Spray guns, or sprayers, from which periodically spray soil, plants and terrarium walls
  • Rain installations
  • Fog generators
  • Fountain pumps

Hygrometers or thermometers combined with a hygrometer are used to measure air humidity.

Lighting

Terrarium lighting is provided by incandescent and / or LED and fluorescent lamps. Mirror reflex lamps with a power from 40 to 75 W provide local heating of a certain area of the terrarium, thereby creating hot and cold zones in the terrarium so that reptiles can independently adjust their temperature moving between these zones. For simultaneous lighting and heating of terrariums with nocturnal animals, you can use infrared lamps or simple incandescent lamps with a red or blue bulb, since red or blue light does not bother animals.

Ultraviolet irradiation

For the production of vitamin D, the regulation of mineral metabolism, the stimulation of normal behavior and reproduction, many terrarium animals need ultraviolet radiation.

Most reptiles and many amphibians require UV fluorescent lamps. Most lamps designed specifically for terrarium animals have a certain proportion of ultraviolet light in the spectrum. They are intended for continuous lighting and irradiation of the terrarium. According to the spectrum, such lamps can be divided into three groups:

  • Lamps in the spectrum of which contain little hard UVB (2%). Designed for soft irradiation of amphibians, snakes and night lizards, as well as lighting terrariums in combination with other lamps.
  • Lamps in the spectrum of which the proportion of UVB is 4-5%. Designed for reptiles with a moderate need for ultraviolet radiation: from tropical rain forests and temperate latitudes.
  • Lamps in the spectrum of which the proportion of UVB is 7-10%. They are intended for reptiles of arid zones (steppes and deserts), which have a high need for ultraviolet radiation.

Erythemic and quartz medical lamps can be used for session exposure of animals.

"Who, who lives in a small tower?"

In terrariums most often contain:

- invertebrates - mollusks, insects, centipedes, spiders, scorpions,

- amphibians - frogs, toads, salamanders, newts,

- reptiles - lizards, geckos, snakes, chameleons, turtles, crocodiles.

Sometimes mammals are also placed in the terrarium. However, enclosures and cages are more suitable for them, since even small animals are very active.

The first terrariums appeared when exotic inhabitants of distant countries began to be brought to Europe. For the animals to safely cross the road, suitable conditions were needed for them on the caravels. Modern terrariums also require considerable care - about temperature, lighting, humidity, soil, creating a familiar environment for the wards.

Climbing animals need vines, branches, snags, lovers of raw shelters - moss, stones.

Not only Terra

Crabs, most amphibians, some turtles need a pond, even a tiny one, for a normal existence. By arranging it, you turn their housing into aquaterrarium. If the micropond at the front glass takes up no less space than land with plants and animals, then we have before us paludarium (latin palus"Swamp") Maintaining it in good condition is a troublesome business, and museums and zoos usually do this.

Another option is an all-glass container, in which only plants live. Plus soil, a few beautiful pebbles, a sink. Such florarium put on a shelf, a table, mounted on a wall, suspended in a window opening. Care of the composition is minimal, the benefit is undeniable: it pleases the eye, soothes, moisturizes the air too dry in the apartment.

Snake Farm

Statistics say that every year in the world up to 80 thousand people die from snake bites. But no statistics will tell you how many people snake venom saved from illness and death. It is part of many drugs and serums. Moreover, chemists are not yet able to synthesize such a mixture in laboratories. To obtain poison, there are special snake "Farms" - serpentariums. These are rooms where snakes are kept and periodically, about once a month, “milked”. Massage of poisonous glands or a discharge of a weak (5–8 volts) electric current through the mucous membrane of the mouth - and a cloudy liquid flows down the teeth into the vessel. The poison is dried, stored and sold to pharmacists.

The world's first serpentarium was built in Brazil in 1899. In the USSR, starting in the 1930s, serpentariums were opened in Central Asia, Azerbaijan, Moscow, and later in Dagestan, Novosibirsk, and Togliatti. Dangerous inhabitants of the serpentarium live in enclosures with shelters, solitary cells or terrariums. Snakes are fed with small rodents, birds. Experts select the optimal content regimen so that the snakes live longer and give larger products.

In large serpentariums, sometimes showrooms are arranged to attract curious tourists. Here snakes live in spacious designer terrariums. Visitors bravely pick up large, catchy-colored, but, of course, non-toxic snakes, pythons and take pictures to commemorate a visit to such an unusual sight.

What are terrariums for?

As mentioned above, terrariums are intended for plants and animals that need a special habitat different from the place in which the terrarium is located. Inside, a special favorable environment is formed for the life of plants and animals. In order to answer the question “What is a terrarium?” We need to understand that often terrariums have their own lighting and heating, therefore they can be anywhere and animals and plants can live inside them.

Terrarium Sizes

The shape of the terrariums is also different and depends on what animals they contain.

Almost grandma’s pickles

I want to recommend one more of the foreign channels I signed up for on the topic of aquarium and semi-aquatic themes.

Specifically, such terrariums as in the video below, you could meet on the channels all kinds of life hacking fans and other things with screaming headlines "SHOCK MADE THE ETERNAL TERRARIUM"

But this author has a completely different approach, and indeed, if you look at his apartment, it is clear that he lives by this. And yes, the contents of such jars live really long. I myself want to try to pile this, even specially cleaned the stickers and put aside two cans of Mosson coffee.

Here is part of the author’s description of this video:

“I personally see terrariums as an art form, and I wanted to demonstrate the process this way. I think people tend not to follow the process (for most things) and only want results. The process is often as beautiful as the result.”

He also makes ordinary aquariums, solid large paludariums, ripariums, etc.

And in this video, he made the “ecosphere” with a tree from suddenly a tree and used cladophore moss balls as a crown. For me personally, it’s not new, I made similar from a cladophore, but in an ordinary aquarium. In the same way, it also looks very entertaining. If we talk about this moss, it is very affordable and inexpensive, the last time I took 30 rubles per ball on a Moscow bird, I don’t know now.

And here is an example of one of his paludariums with frogs and brook

For me, this kind of video, like the one published in yesterday's post, in addition to sticky observation of the process, also has a huge bunch of inspiration and a storehouse of ideas that can be compromised.

Eternal Terrarium

Recently I went to the forest and collected some moss. I decided to make a mini terrarium. First I wanted to put a long monologue on the whole video about how I heroically plowed the expanses of forests and swamps, but then I just decided to put on the music I like. I think everything is clear and without words. If you have any questions, write in the comments.

1. “Very voiced champagne”

“Friends decided to celebrate the New Year at home. They invited a bunch of friends, the table was bursting with salads, pickles, sandwiches with caviar and other goodies. And now there remains a couple of minutes before the chimes fight, everyone gets up, the owner opens champagne under the general oohs and ahs of anticipation. And then the cork jumps out of the bottle and flies into a glass chandelier hanging directly above the table. Loud ringing, rattling of fragments falling into plates. So I had to throw away all the food and quickly barrage something in a new way. The hostess will remember that New Year for a long time. I wish everyone to remain optimistic in any situation :) "

2. “Mom’s assistant”

“I have only one funny story about the New Year’s dinner - as on December 31, my mother cooked all the root crops, ran away on business, and ordered me to clean everything with a shallow one. But I’m my mother’s assistant. I cleaned everything, then also cut into a cube and mixed. How did I know at a young age that these were preparations for olivier, a vinaigrette coat? That New Year's Eve, we ate a huge bowl of salad of potatoes, carrots, onions, beets, peas, sauerkraut, mayonnaise. Well, in general, everything that was prepared for salads. Herring did not seem to be affected. I don’t remember, it was a long time :) It was very embarrassing. It was necessary to leave instructions, as in these delivery: to cut, to interfere, not to touch, if the arms are not from the shoulders. However, if the hands are not out of the shoulders, no instructions will help ... "

“This is not quite preparation, but a funny story under the chiming clock. I celebrated the New Year with my parents, we decided to change traditions and buy red, not white champagne. And halfway through the president’s speech, my dad reaches for the bottle to open it, pulled off the foil, but cannot open the cork. Frantically trying to open, because soon the chiming clock, dad could not have come up with anything better than to shake her and push the cork with his finger in one deft but powerful movement. At that moment, a bacchanalia began. Like from the movie “Radiance”, where blood poured from the elevator with a fountain, our champagne poured in all directions, filling the New Year's table with bloody splashes, us at the table and everything around. The cork, ricocheting off the ceiling, charged mother straight in the face. We froze while Putin behind the TV screen, covered in bloody smudges, finished his speech and went backward report. Dad somehow poured champagne, which remained almost at the bottom of the bottle and under the hysterical laugh, all in paint and sweet champagne, we celebrated the New Year. P.S. Everything is fine with mom, she got off with a slight fright). ”

4. "Money Lego Pie for Good Luck"

“So, this story happened literally a couple of hours before the New Year. A table was moved from the kitchen to the large room, dishes were laid out on plates and were about to be served. Most of the family has already gathered and is looking forward to a feast. In the kitchen, mom and mother-in-law finish the dishes, the children rush from room to room. And then our four-year-old son noticed that the grandmother was putting a coin in the pie and, of course, panicked. But he immediately calmed down when he was told that it was such a tradition: the one who finds this coin will be accompanied by luck all year. Finally, everyone sat down at the table, gradually ended with olivier, herring under a fur coat, roast, and it was time for the pie. Straight from the oven, rosy, fragrant, steaming! The husband cuts off each piece of each and everyone begins to brake the cake with a knife in the hope of finding a coin. To my surprise, I find not one, but four! A similar catch for all participants in the feast. The culprit of such abundance became apparent when her husband came across a Lego man. As it turned out, the son wanted the year to be successful for everyone and therefore took a trifle from the nightstand, generously poured it into the pie, while the adults turned away. Apparently, in the hope that next year will be just as rich in legos, he also put a figure from the designer there. Of course, the pie came out so money that we couldn’t eat it, but this year really turned out to be happy and full of good memories! ”

5. "New Year in the style of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"

“I can’t say that the story is funny or sad, but it evokes my fondest memories. I was six years old, and I had seen enough of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, played them, but what there, I myself was a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (in my thoughts). What do they like? That's right - pizza! And it was this dish that I asked my mother for the New Year's table, and since there was not enough money, my mother began to get out and cooked pizza. With herring and processed cheese "Friendship". That day I sat under the garlands, drank Pepsi and ate pizza with herring. I was happy".

Congratulations to the authors! We are sad that we cannot give sets to everyone, everyone. But send the rays of love (and the promotional code Picabu) Let the New Year be even warmer and more comfortable. All tangerines!
